Bob Dylan was a huge influence on the majority of your list by their own admission. Surely he has to be on it.

If your talking pure fame in the way Paris Hilton is famous, then Dylan wouldn't be among the top 5. If you asked the greatest artists in the music world who blows their mind, who they most admire, who does something that they can't, Dylan would be the hands down winner. His influence is untouchable in the last 50 years.

I love Elvis and The beatles, and they were unquestionably more famous than Bob Dylan, but no where near as respected by those in the know. If you took a poll when they were all alive and asked the Beatles,Neil Young,Rolling Stones,Grateful Dead,Bob Marley who is the true genius of their time,Dylan would win resoundingly. At one time or another I have heard or read most of them say it in interviews. For those who haven't really listened to Dylan, or couldn't get by his voice, you are missing a once in a lifetime genius, but he isn't as famous as the others mentioned.

Also putting 50 cent or The Black eyed Peas on a list of most famous of all time that is rediculous. They have not lasted the test of time, and I see no Kennedy Center Award ceremonies in their future. Tupac might be able to be listed among the others in 10 years if his influence continues for another decade.

Most famous: I think of three off the top of my head.

Beatles
Michael Jackson
Elvis Presley

Well as long as we agree on Ludicris I could let 50 cent go.

Also note that while rap music is the most popular genre in the USA it is not elsewhere; I couldn't spot a single rap album on last week top 40 charts of England, Germany or Finland. A few r&b ones but no rap as far as I could tell.

Okay, I saw Echo and the Bunnymen open for REM back in the day.
If they toured again today, Echo would obviously still be the opening-act.
So I'm really hoping this is a joke.

I think Madonna is a fairly clear 4th on such a list but Sinatra is a good call.

I could walk past 50 cent on the street and have no idea.
Artists who I think are more 'famous' than 50 cent include Sean Combs, Coolio, Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, the list goes on.

Jennifer Lopez deserves consideration too. I think I might put her 5th right behind Madonna.

I think you people are underestimating Michael Jackson. It's hard to judge between him and Mozart for obvious reasons (like are we counting if dead people know the artist or not? what if they died before Micheal Jackson was born?), but I'm pretty sure one of them has to be the winner.

I would be very surprised if Michael Jackson was not more famous than The Beatles and Elvis Presley. And I would be moderately surprised if Elvis was not more famous than the beatles. (Like someone said, not the songs but the image, name and person.)

I was kidding about 50 cent (and others) but nice to see it sparked some debate. Guess it's easy to level when you have less than 1K posts.

But in all seriousness, no way in hell is Coolio more famous than 50.

I honestly think that more people know about MJ, Beatles and Elvis if u look in every corner of the world. But its probably pretty close.

For example, my littlebrother whos is like 7 knows about MJ and so deos all my cousins who live in stonehouses without sealings in Tunisia. I dont think they know about Beethoven, allthough I figure that most of the people in civilized areas of the world know about those guys.

Remember that we are talking about the genereal public here and not the general well educated 2+2er.
