there has to be some older country too, but I can't think of one right now

'Burning Ring of Fire' Johnny Cash.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken by the Carter Family is one not a lot of people on this site would even know. But I bet if they sit down and listen to it in the right setting they'd be moved.

Really prefer the version that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did on Volume II of Will the Circle Be Unbroken, with Johnny Cash taking the first verse. May be a little too percussion heavy, but still awesome. Hell, the Grit's version on volumes I (which is basically the Carter family version)
and III are awesome too.

Other genre defying classics that come to mind:
Nuthin But a G-Thang
King of the Road
Sultans of Swing

Exploding Hearts - "I'm a Pretender". Another song not too many people may know, but I sincerely believe this would have been a hit in any era. Its sound is timeless.

Downloaded this out of curiosity. Cant say I agree with you on everyone liking it.

I think people have to actually know the songs in order for them to be considered classics.

I'm not sure how much love this will get from people who don't care for the genre, but I'll put in a vote for one of my personal favorites: Foo Fighters - Everlong.

This one is in my rather short playlist right now too. Great tune.

I think some are taking this thread more seriously than others. The songs I listed just fit my ear really well and I could listen to them virtually ad nauseum, but I could see how most of them won't go down in lore as "classics". That said, by virtue of overexposure or maybe I just don't like the sound, a lot of the classics listed aren't songs that I particularly care for.

I once had a dream that my grandmother was singing Player's Ball. I think I had the CD on while I was asleep.

They might not, but I stand by what I said. I think this would have been popular in the 50s, and many eras since.
