I was going to make a Tivo S3 review thread, but it looks like a few people already have decided to get their own. The more HD channels I was watching, the unhappier I was with my S2, and I had started to have to watch HD programs live, defeating the whole point of Tivo.

So when I got the S3, I was as happy with it as I was when I first got Tivo.

+
HD recording
Dual tuner
Dual CableCARDs - no IR repeater lag or incorrect channel changes (only $1.50 extra for 2nd card)
HD!!!!
Remote is nicer (however I use a Logitech Harmony, which is great btw, for all my devices so no benefit to me).
Lifetime transfer for eligible owners [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
SATA interface - once copyright issues have been resolved you will be able to add additional storage without hacking into your box.

-
Not inexpensive (I found mine for $699)
Dual tuner means it is recording EVEN MORE! Good time management is a must to avoid watching additional crap
Loss of On Demand (don't use it anyway)
Rarely, I get some audio buffering lag, which goes away if I pause.

Also, happy to answer any questions.

Also, there is a 30-second jump code you can enter that turns your FF button into a jump 30 secs button (initially I didn't see the point, but after jumping a few 30 sec commercials I quickly decided I liked it).

Enter Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select

In that case, I will have to check to see if

Select-Play-Select-E-N-A-B-L-E-D-I-R-E-C-T-V-Play

works on the S3 for you!

Sorry, didn't work. Although I then immediately got a "Your channel lineup has changed" msg and seven new HD porn channels appeared, so not a total waste of time...

This thread inspired me to try to make my Comcast DVR dealy better. If you have the dct3412 box you can enable the 30 second skip forward!

1. Choose an unused or unneeded button on the “silver” remote to be the 30-second skip command. I used my “A-lock” button, and in retrospect (with two kids) that’s probably not the best choice, but I wanted it near the other DVR controls. Other choices are the PIP buttons at the bottom, (maybe there’s a hack for those too?) or the “help” button (there’s no help either).
2. Press the “Cable” button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
3. Press and hold the “Setup” button until the “Cable” button blinks twice.
4. Type in the code 994. The “Cable” button will blink twice.
5. Press (do not hold) the “Setup” button.
6. Type in the code 00173.
7. Press whatever button you want to map the 30-second skip command to.
web page

This may be old news, but its happy fun time for me.

That's a great code. I find it necessary to use it with all of my TiVos and I'm VERY happy they carried it over the Series3. I was worried about that for awhile.

Anyone know the status of the SATA port? I am interested in expanding mine, but I don't think the Series3 has room for two drives like the old Series2s. I don't know if I want to have to shell out for a 750 GB hard drive to only get 500 GB extra.

I have a DirecTV+tivo box. Is there a code to create a 30 sec button for me?
