Re: Whose cap does Piazza wear in the HOF?
[ QUOTE ]
Yes. As a catcher, Piazza is forced to sit many games out. Give him those games and he has 50 more HRs and he's a lock. Still, you can't compare across positions like that, as Jack is saying. No one knows how well Piazza would've hit had he been a 1B/DH his whole caree, for example. [/ QUOTE ] Forget just the games he had to sit out. His numbers would be significantly better if he played just 125 games per year at 1B instead of straining at C. |

Jack,
Disagree all you want, but at least pay me the respect of allowing me to choose what my own point is. |

Re: Whose cap does Piazza wear in the HOF?
"Oh, so it WAS a pointless statement about his defense!"
Whew. I was afraid calling him "catcher" was some kind of gay slur. I can't tell you how relieved I am that no one was willing to sink so low. |

Re: Whose cap does Piazza wear in the HOF?
[ QUOTE ]
MHe put up better numbers for a longer period with the Dodgers, mostly because he's been in a steady decline since 2003. His first four years with the Mets were as good as anything he did in his 6 years with the Dodgers, though. [/ QUOTE ] This is just wrong. You need to put the years in context. At baseball-reference.com they list a players appearances on the top ten rankings at the end of the year. MVP votes 5 top tens as a Dodger, 2 as a Met; Batting Average 5 as a D, 1 as a M; OPS 5 as a D, 1 as a M; HRs 5-1/2 as a D, 1/2 as a M. ROY as a D; 7 All star games as a D, 5 as a M; All star MVP as a D. He had one year as a Met where is OPS+ (adjusted for park effects, 100 is league average) was above 150. That was in 2000 (although his partial year in 1999 was also above 150). As a Dodger, he had 4 straight years of OPS+ above 150. He led the league twice in OPS+ as a Dodger and was second another time. In summary, he was one of the best players in the game as a Dodger, as a Met he was just one of the best catchers. If you replicate his Met years for the time he was a Dodger, Mike Piazza doesn't even sniff the hall of fame. Case in point: Carlton Fisk. More years with the White Sox, best years as a Red Sox. But the NY media will make sure Piazza goes in as a Met. |

A fairly strong case can be made for both the Dodgers and the Mets, wonder what everyone's thoughts are. Roberto Alomar? O's, Indians, or Jays? Maddux? Braves or Cubs? [/ QUOTE ] Piazza - Mets Alomar - Jays Maddux - Braves |

Re: Whose cap does Piazza wear in the HOF?
If Piazza got to choose, I would think that he would choose LA out of respect to Tommy Lasorda.
