[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I mean, 10% of our population is gay, and AT LEAST that % is gay in pro sports [/ QUOTE ] I really wish that I had a working gaydar so I could make a prop bet with you on that. [/ QUOTE ] Is that true, 10%? I always thought it was like <5%, maybe 2-3%. Also, why did you say "at least". Are gay ppl more likely to be athletes? [/ QUOTE ] 10 percent is the number advanced by gay advocacy groups, but there's never been any evidence that the percentages are that high. It's probably more like 3-4%. |

[/ QUOTE ] I think the 10% figure is meant to include closeted gays. I don't believe 10% of people are fully disclosed gay. Also, I would actually expect far less than 10% of male athletes to be gay. Simply because it seems like kids that grow up with some sexual confusion or homosexual preference tend to be socially awkward and lack confidence as they're trying to figure things out. And it's not the unconfident, unpopular kids that you see starring on the sports teams so much. I'd expect this figure to rise as people become more accepting. A kid these days might realize, "whoa, I'm gay," and not feel so bad about it. |

kind of ironic that tim hardaway spent the better part of his career in the bay area. i wonder how many gay people went to a warriors game to watch him play and line his pockets?
kind of sad that a black athlete would say something like that since it wasn't that long ago that people were saying the same thing about blacks. |

[/ QUOTE ] which is why gay high school students participate in activities that don't require confidence, like drama and singing. oh wait. Actually I agree that the % of gay people is sports is probably lower than it is in the general population, but even if 5% of pro athletes are gay (including closeted gays), that's over 100 gay athletes in just the 3 major American sports. And, whoever said that Laverneus Coles is bi because he was raped by a family member as a child, that's the stupidest thing I've heard in my entire life. |

[/ QUOTE ] Not sure if this makes sense - kids get hooked into sports at a young age, before sexuality is a real issue to them. By the time they realize they are teh gay (let's say highschool) they've already developed a love for the sport, also have been playing for many years. FWIW - my gay buddy (who is a huge, huge sports guy) said about Hardaway - "Well, at least he was honest, and he's saying what a lot of people are thinking anyway." -Al |

The % of male pro athletes that are gay is WAY LOWER than the general population.
Just like the % of male hair dressers that are gay is WAY HIGHER than the general population. Not all distributions are completely uniform and random. This type of thinking is just flawed... if 2% of the general population is legally blind then 2% of professional race car drivers must be legally blind! (not quite the same thing but you get the point) If gays feel shunned by one field and accepted in another, it's only natural that the %'s are going to be skewed. |

Is it bad that the first thing I did upon hearing this was watch Tim Hardaway highlights on YouTube? The guy was pretty sick.

3% seems like it would work for people who are openly gay. If you include closeted gays that probably bumps it up a point or two, maybe more. And if you include people who have 'dabbled', I could see it being 10%.
