DaveT, while your story is compelling, the statement " This site is full of players that won, quit their jobs, and probably have more options in their lives than they would ever have from any corporation" fails to inform us of the simple fact that for every 1 of these, 20 others flame out and get nowhere with it. I'm not in disagreement with you, but there's a fine line between chasing your dreams, and going after realistic goals without risks of destroying your life.

You are absolutely correct FireStorm. I am glad that your statistic is dead on.

Risk has a negative connotation for a reason. As a responsible player, I should take care to be aware of what I am writing. I failed to write that busting is ever-nagging reality.

I also failed to mention that I don't place the same values on my own life as most people do. I would not feel good about myself if someone else has destroyed their life over something that I have wrote.

But... I went on my own because I read what others wrote, watched other's do, and dreamed that I could also.

Have I lost friends over the decisions I have made during my life? Have people given me ultimatums? Have people frowned upon my addictions? Do I have regrets? The answer is yes.

I don't know what to say to the OP specifically. The usual blanket advise is "if you have to ask, then the answer is no."

Life can either be stable or not, that sometimes the better decision is let certain things go, but what can I really say to a 23 year-old with a dime in his pocket, a gleam in his eye, and a dream to make it all better? I feel that with all the noise on this thread, no definitive decision is made for the OP. So I can only say, do what you want. If six months from now, you decide to turn back, then nothing is lost. After 3 years, you better expect changes, and I think that I dealt specifically with those changes in my post.

My two pennies about playing full time, ie becoming a regular somewhere. Your winrate will probably drop. Especially as a young guy, the regulars will assume you are weak/underrolled etc and you will be getting paid off a lot more often (in my experience). Once you show up every day and people know how you play the game won't be as easy.

But, def go for it

Why are people talking about OP's expenses? His plan is to move in with 3 or 4 guys his age and play poker. Burger and fries diet, futon, jeans, t-shirts, some extras and that's it. He's 23 and has already finished college so he knows something about real life (not like just out of high school).

OP, go with your plan and maybe modify it by playing a lot online in your new digs. You're 23 so this is the only chance you will have to make the big score unless you hit the lottery or get an inheritance. The money to be made in poker these days is ridiculous and if you don't take your shot at it now you will regret it later on when you are married and have kids and a full time job.

Do it and don't look back. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Stupid question: Is a live 5/10 NL grinder considered a "red chip pro"? I mean 5/10 is also often played with all $5 dollar chips but I dont know if I would still consider them to be merely a "red chip pro" and only capable of making a marginal income? What do you guys think?

I've never seen a 5/10 no-limit game played with primarily red ($5) chips. I think spreading such a game would be legitimate reason for homicide.

Poker is an awesome hobby/part time job. It's a pretty crummy career. No health or retirement benefits. Horrible environment surrounded by unhealthy conditions and scummy humans. No certainity or security. Not discouraging you, just things to think about. I know some very successful players, and virtually all of them have other sources of income in addition to poker, be it a business or investments or what have you.

As for online vs live. You do get off a ton more hands online, and dont pay tips or travel expenses. But would you rather see 3 times as many hands or play in games 10 times as juicy? 25 times easier to beat? I strongly prefer live play, and play much higher stakes live, and have much better results. Just my opinion. Good luck to you.

Second hand smoke and greasy food arent particularly healthy. Pretty much every cardroom in America features these two things.

No smoke in Vegas or California. And I've never been in a card room where someone shoves food down your throat. What I eat is my choice. As for your other whines, well boo hoo, those are attributes of every self-employed career.
