Re: things you enjoy doing alone
re: watching sports alone.
watching sports with others is always manageable except: 1. in any moderately big game of the two teams i care about (49ers and tarheel bball). the fact that nobody i hang around likes these teams makes finding a fellow die hard fan near impossible...so maybe i could watch with them but im not even sure about that...but i need to be able to pace around a room and my friends are the type to smirk at my misfortune so being alone is the only thing that keeps me sane. i even turn off my cell phone a lot cuz in the really big games text start flying in from people i dont even talk to regularly taking shots at my team's struggles. 2. when im glued in front of a tv trying to watch 2+ events at once. most recent example being yesterday with tennis, golf and football on. my roommate and i were both interested in all 3 but our priorities were different and it was hell. picture in picture helps a little but he kept featuring golf and i cared least about it...so yea, i'd rather be alone on big sports days where remote powers are key (obviously a sports bar is a viable option but i like hearing tennis commentary so it wasnt an option yesterday). |

1) Playing a round of golf. You can move very quickly if you're solo and people let you play through. Also it's more peaceful and you can cheat as much as you want, play multiple balls, etc. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with this, but not entirely for the same reasons. Up until last summer, I played well over 100 rounds (9 hole rounds) of golf each year for about 12 straight years. I guess one reason I have come to enjoy playing by myself so much is that none of my friends have ever been interested in the game as much as me. However, I never do it because I can cheat. I don't play multiple balls and I can't remember the last time I took a mulligan. I did play winter rules up until last year, probably because the course I grew up on was a goat track. I decided I would get a lot better though if I play it down all the time, everywhere. On a related note, this weekend was the "big" 36-hole stroke play tournament at my home course. It's sort of a big deal to me because other than the match play club championships which go on all summer, this is the only legitimate (or so I thought) golf tournament at the course. Other than that, it's just scrambles every weekend all summer long. Anyway, when I got there Saturday, I bought into the skins and they asked if I wanted to buy my mulligan for the day. Hahaha. Also, everyone played winter rules and they were giving putts. I guess that's partly why I play alone. |

Re: things you enjoy doing alone
one thing i like doing alone that hasn't been mentioned yet is skiing. It's so much easier to go skiing alone since you never have to wait for anyone, or worry about losing track of them on the hill.

[/ QUOTE ] Good call. Skiing alone is sometimes better for the reasons you listed, but having a friend who can keep up with you can make a huge difference. Skiing, along with most other activities listed in this thread, is largy dependent on the quality of the person who is with you. |

Something I've noticed is that when I travel I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I would if I was with someone "better" to travel with...like matching my desires and such in terms of what to do. I would agree with mason's friend that finding a good traveling buddy is near impossible. I would love to, but I haven't. That said, I'm not sure how well I would do traveling/vacationing alone. I think I would wish someone was there to share the moments with. I don't know. Also, I have no problem eating alone, but I also rarely take a book. I remember there being a thread on this and specifically remember Blarg and others saying that they thought people who sit and eat alone while not reading look like idiots. Mostly because they look like they're just spacing off and daydreaming. |

Re: things you enjoy doing alone
The casino is the only big one for me. When Im with my friends I turn into a degen both at the poker table and in the pit. When I go by myself I generally avoid the pit and I play +EV poker, not straddling or reraising with trash etc.
