Re: on order cocktails at a bar or restaurant
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Can someone give me a varied list of classy manly drinks to try? Stuff like gin and tonic, crown and coke, etc. I want a go to drink when I meet girls that isn't bottled beer. Most of these drinks will probably come from the Bellagio. [/ QUOTE ] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fin..._Mixing_Drinks Scroll down to "The Six Basic Drinks" [/ QUOTE ] the first 5 are familiar, but i've never heard of a jack rose or of applejack. if you order this at a bar are they likely to have it? do liquor stores carry applejack? |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] forgot to add, I love these drinks because they taste good. [/ QUOTE ] ... and you're gay. [/ QUOTE ] Might be getting leveled, but I really hate [censored] like this. Very frat boyish IMO. [/ QUOTE ] a couple weeks ago a young frat boy made fun of me for drinking wine. he was drinking keystone light. why do frat boys think light beer is a manly drink? |

[ QUOTE ]
There was a week where I started drinking Kir Royals then I realized it was a pink drink in a flute with a big strawberry so it had to go. [/ QUOTE ] I actually like this as an aperitif, although the strawberry thing is new to me. In fact, some good cocktails/aperitifs are based on champagne: the Kir royal can be modified by using any kind of liquor instead of creme de cassis. If you're in a decent place they'll ask you how dry you want it, and if you have it very dry it's almost like having champagne but with a little tangy twist to it. I can also appreciate a good bellini (pureed fresh peach with prosecco), although here in Canada few places seem to know what it is. |

[/ QUOTE ] Here's a nice Washington Post article that goes into the history a little and then two guys' quest to order one at a bar in DC. I tried making one with cheap applejack and it sucked. I'd like to try again someday using a decent apple brandy but it's tough to find around here. |

Re: on order cocktails at a bar or restaurant
spider,
There seems to be only one type of applejack made nowadays, so it's either Laird & Co. or nothing. Also, I am excited to try and make this very soon. Maybe tonight. |

[/ QUOTE ] Right, I should have mentioned that I tried making the Jack Rose with a cheap apple brandy and not true applejack. I'm going to use Laird's or a decent apple brandy next time. I guess a true Jack Rose uses applejack, but apparently applejack is just apple brandy + neutral spirit so it seems to me like substituting a decent brandy should be acceptable, right? |

Re: on order cocktails at a bar or restaurant
I would assume it wouldn't be too much different since one of the bartenders in your story offered to substitute pear brandy for a different version of the drink.

Re: on order cocktails at a bar or restaurant
Just bought Applejack, Grenadine and Lemon Juice. Which of these two wikipedia recipes do I go for?
Main wiki page: * 3 parts applejack * 2 parts lemon or lime juice * 2 dashes grenadine Fine Art of Mixing page: * 1 part Grenadine * 2 parts lemon juice * 8 parts Applejack iDrink page: * 0.5 oz. Grenadine * 0.75 oz. Sour mix * 1.5 oz. Apple Brandy I'm thinking 2 first then 1. 3 seems ridiculous, plus I don't have sour mix. |

Re: on order cocktails at a bar or restaurant
Recipe 2:
Feels a little heavy on the Applejack side, but not overpoweringly so. Not very much sweet or tang to it though. It seems like the other two ingredients merely colored the drink (btw it's pink as gay can be) and muted the taste a little. I missing the sweet and tangy description in the WP article: "The aroma was amazing, and the taste better than we could ever have imagined. It was smooth with just the right bite; sweet with a subtle tang. We took our time and savored every moment." Would definitely drink again, however. |
