I don't watch ESPN, etc. that much, but do NHL refs really get [censored] by "national writers of consequence"?

I'm basing all of my thoughts on the fact that every year during the playoffs, you always hear about how refs screw up games and how they need to be paid full-time.

Overall, I do feel the NFL is coddled by the media, I don't know why you would assume I feel otherwise.

no, no you don't. This is a very minor issue that is not brought up, despite the complete farce that was Super Bowl XL, the Manning-Polumalu debacle, etc. etc.

NHL refs aren't killed as much as they used to be, but the NHL league office is certainly taken to task whenever a Todd Bertuzzi/Chris Simon incidents happen - sportswriters who couldn't name 10 players in the NHL feel the need to point out what a thuggish sport it is.
