Re: *** Official St Louis Cardinals to the 2006 World Series Thread **
[ QUOTE ]
to those who would comment that i dismiss small sample sizes yet wrote off duncan against lefties based on a fairly small sample: i don't have access to his data against lefties before 2006, but i have no reason to believe his results were better, considering his overall 2006 numbers are way ahead of his previous performance. [/ QUOTE ] One other thing we need to consider is that the Cardinals didn't need a base hit. They just needed someone to put the ball in play. Just because Encarnacion may be a better hitter average wise against lefties doesn't mean he is the best bet to put the ball in play. Duncan has actually shown that he has a pretty good idea of what the strike zone is. You rarely see him swinging at bad pitches, unlike Encarnacion who often looks like he has no clue where the ball is when he starts his swing. Encarnacion has only 19 walks in 442 at bats. Duncan has 17 in 170 at bats. |

[/ QUOTE ] i still disagree with it, but i can at least see an argument for lefty performance or maybe encarnacion's experience making him less likely to get coaxed into a double play. the walk thing, however, doesn't make any sense to me. a huge amount of duncan's at-bats have been in the 2 spot, so those walks were drawn with pujols (and rolen) batting right behind him. he did great on walks in the minors too. encarnacion hacks at a lot of balls. he does fine despite it, but he's not a walker. |

With only 1 out it's not about getting on base it's just giving yourself a chance by getting the ball in play. In that case the free swinging Encarnacion actually outperforms Duncan... E...70 K's in 470 PA (6.71 PA/K) D...36 K's in 191 PA (5.31 PA/K) But in the end it sure is easy to sit here and say he was wrong when it didn't work out... |

I also think the majority of Duncan's strike outs came in the ealier part of the call up. In the last month he has really done a much better job at working the count and putting the ball in play. |

Wow. Mets 8 Albert 7. I thought Pujols had given the MVP chase a jolt in his favor. Think this result swings votes in Betltran's favor? Wow. Just wow... [/ QUOTE ] How does Beltran getting 2 RBI (and Delgado the other 5) make him more valuable to the Mets than Pujols is to the Cardinals when he had to drive in 7 runs just for the Cardinals to even have a shot? |

I think they just wanted to add one more ex-Met for the Shea trip to the 4 who already appeared last night.

What happened to this guy?
3.45 ERA, 153 SO, 51 walks, 21 wins, 1.156 WHIP Where did he go? And how is it even possible for a guy who is 6'6'' to only throw 84 mph? |
