Not that I'm any good at MTT poker or anything, but how the heck do you end up all in preflop with Tens there when you've got a reasonable chipstack. [/ QUOTE ] Go watch the last US Poker Championship and you will see two guys 5 and 6 bet each other with complete trash. I think both went on to the FT, not sure. If you have a read your opponent is weak, then why not get it all-in? |

[/ QUOTE ] Because he's Gus Hansen, and we're not, that's how. He also got almost AIPF on Day 1 vs Elektrik for 40k with KJo and sucked out to win, (obv) |

While Gus is often berated for sucking out, I'd say he still easily is one of the best tournament players post-boom. This may be result-oriented thinking ofc but 4 wins in world-class mtts + an assortment of high-buyin SNG wins got to count for something.

Meanwhile jaybizzle's been busy:
The Ups and Downs of John Bird John Bird just lost a big hand that saw a good portion of his chips go to Scott Freeman. We caught up the hand on the river. With about 700,000 in the pot and the board reading {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, Scott Freeman checked. John Bird bet 600,000 and Freeman called. Freeman showed {A-Spades}{9-Spades} which beat the {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} of Bird. This pot catapulted Freeman to 1,600,000 in chips and left Bird with a modest 100,000. Bird doubled through Issac Haxton on the next hand, when his {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts} bested Haxton's {K-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Bird is still well below average however with just under 200,000 in chips. Followed by: John Bird Doubles Through Josh Evans Josh Evans, playing from middle position, opened the pot for a standard raise. Action folded around to John Bird in the small blind who moved all in. Evans called and the players showed... Evans: {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} Bird: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} The board ran out {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and John Bird doubled up to 500,000. Don't feel bad for Evans just yet, he is still a force with just under 2,000,000. |

[/ QUOTE ] After 5 years of lights out results, attributing Gus' success to running good or being a luckbox, doesn't suffice. He's just a great player with a lot of gamble in him. And maybe most importantly, a lot players can talk about playing to win (and not to just cash) all they want, but Gus is one of the very few that actually lives that strategy. |
