There are ton in Boogie Nights. How they show the transitions of the decades through small things -- like the drug dealer expounding on his mixtape--the end of records.

The firecrackers going off which add to paranoia. How everyone jumps when the firecrackers go off but the drug dealer.

The music in the scene. Sister Christian while everyone is meeting each other. The scene/tape STOPPING as the cassette turns over on auto-flip. Jesse's girl. Dirk Digler sitting on the couch looking zoned out as things go nuts around him--wondering how the f he got to THIS place in his life. Then the start off 99Luftballons as Todd spins around delirious with his conquest, not knowing he is about to be greated with a shotgun blast.

My favorite is when they show the slow motion close up of gas expanding in camera flash bulb. It shows the care put into every frame of this movie.

They could have just shown a girl holding a the early 1980's camera and having the flash go off filmed by their regular camera. But, they took the time to film a slow motion close up of the bulb with a special camera.

A whole camera set-up on what is 15 second piece of set decoration.

Another scene like this is in Goodfellas. The shot is just 30 seconds of Deniro sitting at the bar by himself smoking while Sunshine of Your Love plays. Sitting there, he looks ready to jump off the bar stool and rip your guts out.

Oh yeah -- just noticed your Top Gun avatar again... similar uniform Cruise wears in AFGM when he takes his Navy whites to Cuba. For a second I thought you had a AFGM avatar until I recognized Goose.

yeah, i used to have the thumbs up pic but was in need of a change. somehow still never seen AFGM even though i'm a big sorkin fan. must do soon.

Before the final battle scene is Saving Private Ryan: The deuchebag Brooklyn guy looks at Matt Damon & says nothing with a slight nod as if: "lets nail these Kraut bastards". I like that scene.

Haha, bringing up Spielberg is a must in a thread like this.

After the movie already ends and has really ended twice: "Did I lead a good life?"

Way to shamelessly keep pounding away at it and bring home the bacon, Little Stevie.

Spinal Tap ... hard to pick just one, but if I had to it's this one: Nigel is playing his guitar by bowing it with a violin (not a bow, an entire violin). The guitar is making the expected raucous mess of feedback and noise, but he pauses as if something is not quite right ... and tunes the *violin*.

Wow, get to this immediately. It's really good. Gets criticized a bit for Reiner's bleeding heart direction, but it has an exceptional screenplay and terrific performances from Kevin Bacon, Kevin Pollak, Kiefer Sutherland, and of course Jack and Cruise.

Oh this reminds me of another great subtle moment from AFGM.

Rookie trial lawyer Cruise is putting a decorated Colonel on the witness stand and accusing him of perjury, obstruction of justice, and several other crimes. He pretends to be cool and calm about it all until he turns away from the bench for a minute to grab a glass of water. His hand shakes as he drinks it. Pretty funny if you notice it.
