I honestly think most people in Europe under age 20 have no idea who Michael Jordan was. Some guy who a decade ago played a sport that means nothing in this continent, and sold trainers they don't make any more. WTF, why would young people know about him? I think people are massively over-estimating his fame outside America.

why is everyone so down on the pope? there's a billion catholics, and they all know what he looks like. probably most every orthodox christian knows what he looks like too.

Yea because that's actually going to happen?
eg; Take off Bush's suit, get rid of his podium and enhance his communicative skills, then pick him out of this line up  These things are what create the recognisability and perception of these people. Otherwise the most recognisable guy in the world is brian peppers or something.

There was a study done a few years back on this exact subject. I can't remember who did it, but it was an internationally recognized company.
#1 was Madonna #2 was Michael Jackson Jordan, Beckham and Woods were in the top 20. George Bush wasn't. People who don't watch TV (a large part of the population) know who Madonna and Jacko are.
