Yeah I was trying google images and only knew 35w and wasn't finding much. Thanks for linking.

I agree with Badugi that scour around the piers is a very likely culprit.

edit: nevermind, says piers are out of water, probably not scour

yah, according to this and the photos, it was designed to have no piers in the water.

The density of concrete is ~150 lbs per square inch. If the new concrete is 3" thicker than the old surface, this is an additional 38 lbs per square foot of road surface.

For comparison to the structural loading, the following are specs I found (using a brief, inaccurate search) for semi-trucks:

maximum width = 8 feet
maximum length = 50 feet
maximum weight = 80,000 pounds

This works out to 200 pounds per square foot of road surface.

Ok, I don't think the added concrete thickness matters anymore.

Guys - I'm ok. I work downtown but take 35W SOUTH to go to/from, not north.

However Francis Gross golf course is just over the bridge from my office, and we have a golf outing there tomorrow for which we are leaving work early. Now we have to detour, so obviously I'm pretty annoyed. It will probably take like an extra 5-10 minutes to get there now.

Holy damage control by the engineering firm's lawyer on local news just now. It was gross. Typical lawyer.

It's an estimate, not a bet. I don't think it's ghoulish at all. Its just speculation regarding a sad subject.
