Barry Bonds, David Ortiz, Vladimir Guerrero... There are some major league hitters you just can't let beat you in the late innings of a close game. Chief among them all, however, is almost certainly Jack Cust. Cust would have gotten his chance years ago, but every GM in baseball knew that to use him was to risk shaking the very foundation of the game. That Cust has had to wait until 28 for regular playing time will probably prevent him from reaching 1,000 career homers, which is a shame. Still, 500 is very much in reach, perhaps by the end of the season.

[ QUOTE ]
In 2003 a 24 year old Jack Cust played 27 games with the Orioles (.260/.357/.521). He hit 4 HRs in 72 ABs and gave them a 135 OPS+. The "regular" DH (they seemed to rotate a lot of guys into this spot), David Segui, hit 4 HRs in 224 ABs for an OPS+ of 96. BJ Surhoff, who might have been second in DH appearances, had an OPS+ of 104 in 319 ABs. What the heck happened in Baltimore to poor Jack Cust? Did Hargrove catch him in bed with his wife? ... Cust's AAA record Year OPS 2001 .940 2002 .931 2003 .848 2004 .791 2005 .840 2006 1.017 [/ QUOTE ] as per BBTF. Looks like Cust faded in the minors after being sent down by the Orioles. Maybe he was hurt. But last year it looks like he starts to figure things out again but he trapped in an NL organisation (Padres) that can't play him because of his horrible defense. Beane scores another one. I think Cust might stick around for a while as a useful DH. |
