Yup as a pro-poker player you are destructive parasite preying on peoples addictions. No good being proud that you studied hard to take some grandma's life savings.

So here's my solution:
I repent every Sunday and put extra money in the collection plate.
I do charity work in the community.
One day when I have enough money I'll quit poker buy a church hall and preach Bible.

tell me you are not serious

Actually, trading might provide a little liquidity, but that's about all. I am a member of an exchange and trade my own account in the wheat pit. I've been doing it since 1978, and have seen it all. In trading in the pit, I get to see the pit brokers look at their order to see if they're buying or selling. That is a huge advantage right there. After you spend awhile in the pit, you instinctively know when the pricew is going to go from bid to offer, which is a good thing. I like to scalp, which is making quick trades, for small quick profits. Being in the pit and scalping is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Everybody that has been around for awhile in the pits and has been successful, tends to play a pretty good game of poker.

It's true poker players don't contribute much to the society, besides the jobs they create in the casinos.

However, neither do poker players contribute negatively to the society or the environment. An online poker pro uses just a little electricity in his profession, he doesn't even need a car to travel to his job. Also, if poker was illegal, the money he and the casinos take would be spent elsewhere, most likely on entertainment that's way more harmful on the environment.

this is really a great point you bring up. i honestly think the best way to play poker is NOT to really focus ALL your energy on it, but rather, have it become a hobby that you're consistently good at. you can still make a living that way, but when someone can only define you as a "poker player" you need to step back and examine your own life. as much as i love poker, i would never call myself just a "poker player", because i have many more interests and things that are more important to me.

get some hobbies or interests to balance out the poker, and you'll realize that the money flowing in and out and how much more social and enjoyable your days will become will greatly outweigh the notion of becoming a "professional poker player". in my mind, that would just plain suck to grind it out like that, unless you were (heh) negreanu or doyle or stuey or something. then i guess the high life and partying in vegas wouldn't be so bad, but then i still wouldn't want to call myself just a poker player =)
