I don't know if these are "must own," but they are some of the albums I'd miss most :
Elvis Costello : "This Year's Model" Tom Waits : "Rain Dogs", or "Small Change" The Pogues : "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash" Liz Phair : "Exile in Guyville" They Might Be Giants : "Flood" The Police : "Outlandos D'amour" The Clash : "London Calling" Concrete Blonde : "Bloodletting" (Don't know if this is considered old yet, or really ever was good enough to be considered with any other albums in this thread, but I frequently find myself wanting to hear it. Call it a guilty pleasure if you want.) |

Steely Dan-Aja [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill. Multi-levelled lyrics a poker player can't but love (try this to scratch the surface), jazzed out licks that groove (Midnight Cruiser, ftw), and, as Duke Ellington is credited, "if it sounds good, it is good." [/ QUOTE ] I'm gonna agree with both these selections, but would like to highlight the I believe very overlooked "Royal Scam". Give it a whirl - it might be their best album. -Al |

Just thought of another one -- Joni Mitchell's Blue is a huge classic that everyone should definitely own. [/ QUOTE ] This or "Miles of Aisles", imo (which has alot of "Blue" tracks on it). If I could only listen to 1 Hendrix album - Axis: Bold as Love 1 Zeppelin album - Houses of the Holy 1 Beatles album - White Album 1 Elvis Costello - eh wow, too hard to say, shoot myself ftw -Al |

[ QUOTE ] Re: Elvis Costello. "My Aim is True". I think that's the wrong choice, by a pretty wide margin. It's good. It just doesn't come close to This Year's Model, Trust, or Imperial Bedroom (and more). This Year's Model is his most rocking. Imperial Bedroom might be his most dynamic work; or rather, his best dynamic work in which he absolutely nailed it. [/ QUOTE ] Objectively, I agree with you, but I for some reason have a giant soft spot for My Aim Is True. [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] Ditto. When I listen to EC, which isn't too often anymore, it's almost always MAIT - but it might be due solely to "Watching the Detectives" grrrrreeeat tune. |

Return to Forever--Romantic Warrior
Great Jazz-fusion band featuring Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea etc. A wonderful album-long treat. |

I might do a detailed Pink Floyd post tomorrow when I have more time. In response to the OP, I think BBC Sessions is just as essential as any of LZ's studio albums. Especially for those of us too young to have ever had the chance to see them live. [/ QUOTE ] I had forgotten about the BBC Sessions. I just bought them, and wow this is great stuff. |

I'm a huuge Police fan. But for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would place Outlandos ahead of, say, Ghost In The Machine or Synchronicity. I cringe when I hear stuff like Peanuts and Born In The 50s. Side B of the original Synchronicity LP (Every Breath, King of Pain, Wrapped, Tea in the Sahara) is one of the sickest displays of songwriting evaaaar.
No one ever talks about Peter Gabriel anymore. My fave by him is the often-overlooked Us. |

I never thought I would see the day where I would refer to these bands as older, but given that their prime was twenty years ago they are officially older. Anyway, to me the bands that everyone should know are the bands that were on the SST label in the early to mid eighties. They have been hinted at earlier in the thread, but as a group of bands and particular albums they stand head and shoulders above the rest. Also, I chose these not because they are edgy or unkown or punk or whatever, I chose them because they exemplified the best in rock music during that time.
Meat Puppets--Meat Puppets II and Up on the Sun The Minutemen--Double Nickels on the Dime Husker Du--Zen Arcade Sonic Youth--Evol Dinosaur JR--You're Living All Over Me Non SST honorable mentions: Fishbone The Replacements The Untouchables Butthole Surfers Minor Threat |
