I'm curious: How many of you voted against movies you didn't see? I know I did.

(BTW, it was my inability to find "King of Comedy" in any video store in the country that prompted me to sign up for NetFlix. It is such a cool movie.)

My top 6 in order (Casino would be on there if it weren't for every single scene with Sharon Stone):

Mean Streets
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
Raging Bull
The King of Comedy
Gangs of New York

I assume I am the only person who thinks Goodfellas is slightly overrated.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh come on man, you gotta admit that the steadycam shot in Goodfellas is the money. I mean, I heard it took 4 days to light for that shot.

[/ QUOTE ]Technical difficulty in mounting a shot has little to do with the artistic merit of the shot. Or the film itself.

If technical difficulty alone was the criterion, the greatest film of all time is probably The Russian Ark. One-shot, full length, all-traveling.

An astute observer might notice that both of my posts in this thread are quotes from Swingers, but clearly its not as fun or clever as I thought since only one person got it.

Taxi Driver is like Dostoyevsky on screen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Imagine, THREE pages into this thread and only now does anyone trot out any real praise for Taxi Driver.

Look, Goodfellas is an entertaining film, and, I think, even "great."

But Taxi Driver is definitive. Travis Bickle is one of the greatest characters in movie history ("I think I got stomach cancer."). The entire film is the peak of cinematic achievement, seriously. It's so much better than junk like the Color of Money, I don't even know what to say.

[/ QUOTE ]

The only thing Taxi Driver is missing is a good plot. I think this movie is way overrated.

[/ QUOTE ]

You don't see a plot? Seriously?

Well, even if there were no plot to speak of, itr would STILL be a great film simply because of the dialogue, the acting, and the cinematic skill.

One day a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.

I have only seen 6 of these. I'm honestly surprised Gangs of NY got more than 5 or 6 votes. That was one of the worst films I've ever seen, and Casino is one of my favorites.

Last Temptation, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Departed were all good, though while I found Departed very entertaining and bought it recently I don't consider it any kind of cinematic masterpiece by any means. Time to order the rest of these from netflix

I assume I am the only person who thinks Goodfellas is slightly overrated. I think it's a great film, but I don't think it is as amazing as most people feel it is.

However, it's still my second favorite of Scorsese's films, with my favorite being Raging Bull.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree completely, it is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and in my opinion it just isnt. I also think Taxi Driver was flat out bad, so maybe I just dont like Scorcese, although I liked most of the Departed, Raging Bull, and even Goodfellas, but they are not great movies in my opinion. Raging Bull is the best.

Im shocked at how low Mean Streets is, not surprised about After Hours, but more people still need to see that.

In any case, I don't think it's too controversial to call Taxi Driver, Ragging Bull and Goodfellas Marty's 1, 2, 3. If I had to, I think I'd rank them in that order too.
