I'll probably get bashed, but

Nelly - Country Grammar

The first time I heard this on the radio I knew it was going to be huge. I still think it is one of the best rapish songs of all-time.

[/ QUOTE ]

could come up with 200rap songs without much effort that are leagues better

I actually think Ride wit Me is one of the best songs of the 2000s, and pretty close to an instant classic.

I think the only songs from the last 20 years that I agree with are Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit and OutKast - Hey Ya. I probably just have different standards than previous posters, but when I first heard those 2 songs I remember thinking "Holy S---! That is REALLY, REALLY awesome!"

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't understand the fascination with Hey Ya at all

Andre3000 earlier work >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>> The Love Below

Player's Ball
Wheelz of Steel
Rosa Parks
Da Art of Storytelling
ATLiens
Two Dope Boyz
Ms Jackson

Hey Ya is song for Soccer Moms

Nirvana has a ton of songs better than Smells Like Teen Spirit

Nas: NY State of Mind FTW(in rap)

Big Star - "Thirteen" and "September Gurls". I don't even think most of you know who they are. But I think these songs are both beautiful and transcendent and two of my alltime favorites.

Other than those two...

The Beta Band - "Dry the Rain"
Guns N' Roses - "Welcome to the Jungle"
Exploding Hearts - "I'm a Pretender". Another song not too many people may know, but I sincerely believe this would have been a hit in any era. Its sound is timeless.

I'll think of more.

Meh. We're not going for the grungier-bluesier-little-known-older stuff here. We're going for the big kahuna hit. The song that the first time you, me, and yeah soccer moms all accross the nation heard it--we all perked our ears up and said "hmmm, there's something". The one that if you happened to be the studio when it was recorded, you could be telling that story til the day you died.

I feel like a ton of Motown/soul era songs tend to fit the criteria of your OP.

[/ QUOTE ]

Agreed.....Way too many to list.

Many good songs that fit the OP’s criteria on this list already. I would add the following….

For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
Light My Fire - Doors
Papa was a Rolling Stone - Temptations
Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Eleanor Rigby – Beatles
I can see for Miles – The Who
Dancing in the Streets – Martha & the Vandellas
Fingertips (Part 2) – Little Stevie Wonder

does Los Del Rio - Macarena count?? or does that just count as a song that made 10s of millions go temporarily insane

With Hey Ya it just seems to me that it may be on the list right now, but off it 5yrs or 10yrs from now, seems like just a standard pop hit. It might just be I have an irrational hatred towards the song
