I think the poker economy is like any other, subject to boom times and bust times, with bust times coming right after booms. I don't think anyone can argue that poker did not just go through a boom. But recessions (and even depressions) don't mean the end of civilization, so I think it's a little crazy to be saying that a poker-recession, for lack of a better word, means the end of poker.

Any oldies fill us in on how (say) 1996 compares to this post-apocalyptic wasteland looming in 2007?
It was never going to be this great forever but it's still wonderful even for donkeys like me to grind out $20 an hour playing a game. The opportunities for the good players have been like a modern goldrush. They rarely last either

2007 is gonna be the year that china opens up its doors for foreign poker sites. Can you say big dollar baby?

However they are only letting euro sites in.

Online qualifiers do drain the online poker economy. However, those same qualifiers who got on TV and won big is what probably caused a lot of people to deposit for the 1st time online in the first place.

Plus, poker is rigged anyways, especially live poker.

Not quite fair. It's hard to tell how much people withdraw, what kind of downswing they keep themselves rolled for, and I'd assume many never redeposit.
