call with any set, if you had it.

(if you had a set there are twice as many live aces out for him to have)

I agree that river is a fold, but what's the worst hand you'd call it with?

[/ QUOTE ]

edit: 99

[/ QUOTE ]
While I guess you can argue that a flop check with AQ is okay as a rare variation play, checking the flop with 99 would be borderline retarded.

I didnt fold because I thought it was unlikely he had a worse ace. I folded because I thought he wouldn't play an ace like this. Doesn't matter how many are out there if he won't play them like this.

the thing i keep thinking though, is that Paluka (a great player for those that don't read the fixed limit board) often makes a general comment which I think is very true. Don't under-represent your hand and then make tight folds. People always want to do that, they say "I must be beat!" and they fold, but they have under-represented their hand so they have caused the other person to put in more action with worse because they dont know how strong they are...

so, if i had bet the flop and he had called. and then turn he had overbet pushed, I would fold easily knowing he would never take that line into a possible ace with a worse hand. but here, where I checked the flop multi-way, I am basically saying "I DO NOT HAVE AN ACE" and then betting big on the turn may, in his mind, confirm that I don't have one. So I feel like I may have INDUCED a bluff on the river, which I then allowed to work by making a 'good' fold. Anyone have thoughts on this line of reasoning...?

[/ QUOTE ]

while i like this line of thinking i don't think that this hand v this player is the right application.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with CAterp here. Also, while this line of reasoning is definately a factor to consider anytime you've under-repped your hand, keep in mind that at limit HE looking the guy up only costs one BB, not your stack. Barring a read, I just don't see this particular opponent pushing here with less than a boat, but I completely understand why the fold bothers you.

FWIW, I can't even count the number of times that I've convinced myself that some 24/11 or 22/10 type villian is bluffing often enough to make a call +EV in this spot, only to get shown the stone colds (or close to it). Hell, I might even call here in the heat of battle sometimes, but after he shows me his 99 or 55 I'll be beating myself up for making the call.

Now, make this guy a tricky, aggro 32/24 or something, and this is an entirely different discussion. I think you made a good laydown.

I didn't read the other responses, so I don't know if anyone said this yet or not, but I'd bet the flop.
