Re: engagement over who gets the ring?
Since he cheated, she has every right to keep the ring. IMO she should give the ring back to him anyways because it obviously doesn't have the meaning it once did. Keeping it just to hock it is pretty shallow.

I think he should get it back, regardless. I like the 'down payment on a house' analogy.

Miss Manners has it right. The ring should be returned voluntarily. Otherwise the woman just shows she is willing to compromise herself for a little money.

Re: engagement over who gets the ring?
[ QUOTE ]
how does it change if the ring is a family heirloom? does it then always go back to the family it came from? [/ QUOTE ] Using the Miss Manners rules, the ring should always return to the original owner. So if it's from her family, it goes back to her family, from his family, it goes back to his family. I particularly like her point that if she keeps it, even if he cheated, it just justifies his actions, as he can then say, "See, I knew she was a money-grubbing whore, so that's why I got out." If she throws it back in his face, he's got nothing. Some things are more important than money. |

Re: engagement over who gets the ring?
[ QUOTE ]
my ex didn't cheat on me but when it ended I just told her to keep the ring because I didn't care to go sell it or have it hanging around. I bought it for $5k out of my bankroll, she pawned it last week for $800. [/ QUOTE ] Reading that made me sick. I wish she hadn't told you what she got for it, and I hope she wasn't still living in the house when she did that. |

Re: engagement over who gets the ring?
She keeps it. If she cheats he can ask for it back.
