When I was 16 years old my dad decided he would buy me a car. My limit was $20K, so my choices were pretty limited.

As others have said, it must have sucked growing up so deprived of anything nice

No contest. Easily the most fun you can have on 2 wheels under 30k.

Evo VIII or Evo IX > STi

I've driven an STi, and it's awesome, I've read many reviews that edge the Evo slightly...I can only imagine. You'll out perform any car listed in this thread (not Vettes, and SC'd Cobras), and won't sacrafice any practicality. Read the reviews man.

i can't stress a MINI Cooper S enough

made by BMW
will outhandle any beamer but the latest Z, will outhandle a boxster, etc etc...
<6sec 0-60, so fast enough
top 10 resale value of any car in US
one of the safer cars
totally customizable (you spec out tons of options and they build and then ship overseas to your dealer)
has all of the luxury options of bmw/mercedes/etc (auto-wipers, auto-leveling xenons, etc etc)
same front-seat room as a Hummer (7'er dirk nowitski drives a MINI)
4 seater, but only 2 doors and back seat leg room is bad if behind a tall person in front (but head room is great)
great local clubs
lots of mods and tunings available
insurance is cheap as it's not classified as sports car
can get jcw tuning kit (w/warranty) for another few k to increase speed
supercharged (will be turbo starting with next year's model tho)

the ONLY sacrifices u make when getting a MINI is trunk space (but is a hatchback so u can fit a 36" tube tv in it unlike sedans) and back-seat legroom when behind tall person

otherwise it outhandles anything under 80k except a lotus elise (not a daily driver and in the 40ks) and it has more luxury features and quality of build than any car in the 20ks and best resale value of any great-handling car

I want something fast, sporty, manual, and preferably with a back seat (2 door or 4 door is fine). So far my favorite is the 350z, but I want more options.

6 speed Mazda RX-8.

- 245HP from the rotary (but, if you've never driven a rotary before, the higher RMP range takes a little getting used to...)

- 4 real seats. I'm 6' tall & my wife & 2 college daughters fit just fine. I wouldn't want to drive from Dallas to Austin, but heading out for dinner is no problem.

- Handles much better than 350Z or Z06. You can go for a twisty drive & still come home with your kidneys.

Check out this video review from Top Gear:
