A couple of these are already mentioned:

Ross MacDonald - Great tautly written LA noir. Crime, rich people, dysfunctional families, and the bitter side of the post-war American dream.

James Ellroy - Hard boiled crime fiction on steroids. In the LA mysteries, lots of [censored] up psycho-sexual killers and cops chasing them who are very flawed but still empathetic. Also has written 2 out of planned 3 volumes in the "Underworld USA" trilogy. The first in this series, American Tabloid, is totally awesome, really a book like no other.

Walter Mosley - Easy Rawlins novels are sharp noirs, with interesting black perspective on the genre. I haven't liked his stuff set in the contemporary period though.

Dennis Lehane - Working-class Boston crime novels, not as good as the others but still pretty entertaining.

American Tabloid is really good. Too many people read LA Confidential, which sucks a lot.

Bruiser

It's like food . Sometimes you want fine steak and wine, sometimes you want a burger and a beer.

There's great burgers and terrible burgers, even though they're all burgers.

[/ QUOTE ] The Fleurburger.

The "a burger is trash by definition" explanation kinda makes the word trash useless as a descriptor.

How have Harold Robbins, Jackie Collins and Jeffrey Archer not been mentioned yet?

American Tabloid is Ellroy's masterpiece, but I definitely would not say that the LA Quartet sucks. The fourth book, White Jazz, is especially good.
