d10, not to sound like a dick, but you sound pretty smart, why are you flying helicopters for the army?

[/ QUOTE ]
Sponger, you seem pretty smart yourself. Its surprising to me that you would under-estimate the intelligence that it takes to be a pilot. What's wrong with applying your talents to something as respectable as flying helos for the army?

You cannot escape vortex ring state with power application - only escape is to reduce collective, lower nose to gain forward airspeed and try to fly out of it.

[/ QUOTE ]

This depends on your rate of descent and power available. If you have power available to overcome the upflow at the root of the rotor blades, pulling that in will get you out of the settling with power condition. Since it takes very specific conditions to get into settling with power to begin with, it should never be a surprise to you when it happens, and you should be able to react before you drop to an unrecoverable rate of descent. If I encounter settling with power in the real world, chances are it will be during a near vertical descent while making an approach into a confined area, and in that situation, trying to get airspeed may not be possible.

I was working towards a CS degree at one point, but it was really boring and I didn't enjoy it much. I was only working on it because I had been into programming ever since middle school when I found out I could make games on those TI-whatever graphing calculators. I ended up getting pretty good at it in high school and it was a well known fact that programming=good money, so I just went with it. When the job market fell apart I started to realize that without all that guaranteed money, programming was a pretty boring job. I always thought being a pilot would be cool, but never really considered it as an option in the past because I felt like my life had already been mapped out. That eventually led to the decision to drop out of school and join the Army to fly helicopters.

[/ QUOTE ]

You handled this question much better than I would have.

OK, good, I was wondering if I was the only one that got that from Sponger's question. I also would've handled that a bit "differently".

I'm used to the question by now, where I grew up the only people who joined the military were guys that had no direction in life and had choices limited to flipping burgers or enlisting, so I've heard the question a lot from people who aren't trying to be insulting, they're just curious.

Has nothing to do with your check ride but...

Does it bother you when movies and tv show the helicopter pilot in the left seat (like an airplane) instead of the right?

Good luck with the check ride.

Is it true that that in nearly every imaginable aspect, Naval aviation is way cooler than Army aviation?
