So there's this Irish fellow who moves to a small town in the Southern US, and he goes scouting around for a good bar. He finds a smaller, quiet place, goes in, and sits way down at the end of the bar.

Bartender comes over, "What can I get you, sir?"

"T'ree pints a stout if ye'd be so kind," the Irishman replies.

The bartender says, "Well sir, I'm sorry, but in this country they only let ya serve one drink at a time."

The Irishman says, "Well, look, I unnerstand an all that, it's just... I promised me brothers Paddy and Liam back in Cork I'd sit at th' bar and have a beer with 'em ev'ry night till I came home."

The bartender is touched by this brotherly gesture and pours the man three pints. The Irishman becomes a regular at the bar, coming in every evening after work, sitting at the end of the bar and ordering the same three pints of stout. The bartender and the other regulars get used to having him around.

Then one day, he comes in and sits at the end of the bar and orders two pints. The bartender notices he has dejected look about him, and he suddenly gets an awful feeling.

"Look," he tells him, "these two pints are on me. I'm sorry about your brother."

"Me brother? Why, what's happened?" cries the Irishman.

"What? Oh, well you just ordered the two pints, so I thought..." stammered the barman.

"Ahh, no, nothin like that," says the mick. "It's just... I promised me wife I'd quit drinkin!"

As is true with most social science investigations, we can't really draw a conlusion.

[/ QUOTE ]

If this were true, we would be unsure that:

The earth is round
The earth revolves around the sun
An apple will fall to the ground
We can construct a vessel that will float
Air travel is possible
Glass can be made clear

Perhaps you are unaware of the distinction between "science" and "social science"?

its the best answer available. by a WIDE margin. therefore its the best answer.

but there is no evidence of this. look I'm not saying AA is bad or won't work, nor am I saying that it's a cure-all and is awesome.

Just saying that one size fits all advice is normally bad, and is extremely bad here.

I agree wholeheartedly. Anyone who is looking for a way out, and especially for OP, remember that the founding basis of AA was the "hopeless" alcoholic, with "hopeless" meaning that all currently available means of treatment had been tried and found ineffective. Many treatments are available today that weren't available in the mid '30s when AA was founded. But the disease has not changed one iota.

No matter which road(s) you choose, you have to get done with your drinking, and be willing to go to any lengths.

For OP, I sincerely hope that self-imposed abstinence or drinking in moderation is sucessful for you.

Read my post about DUI's... this should be enough to make you stop / take any chances.

Substitute liquor for trips to the gym... you'll be thankful
