Default Re: Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?

I hate taking cabs, and I hate tiping cabbies. I remember one time many years ago I took a cab from the Bellagio to the Rio. The far was $5.10. I handed the cabbie six bucks.
He looked at me and said, "I never get this tip so small before. Nobody every tip me this small."

I looked at him and said, "I just did."

Another time the [censored] cabbie took me the long way around from the airport to the Gold Coast. I wasn't paying attention until I realized where I was. I was steamed. When we got there I refused to pay. All hell broke loose. I knew where this was going to end up, but I wanted to have my fun.

"You cheated me, you cheated me!" I was screaming. He screamed back. I said call your supervisor, call the police. I was really enjoying myself. Finally he said, just pay me fare, no tip. TIP! I yelled, TIP! I'll pay the fare minus what you cheated me! The cops came. I explained. I ended up paying the fare. But I got my moneys worth.

And finally, way back when, Ali was in town for a fight with I can't remember whom. Me and two other guys decided to go out to the Hilton to see him train. I was excited about it. We get in a cab. The cabbie starts going on about this and that and finally he said what do you want to go see that [censored] [censored] for?

One of my buddies said, yea screw it let's go gamble, the other buddy said, OK, and we eneded up not going.

I always regretted that.

Nowadays when I get in a cab, I say "Take me to the so and so and don't talk!"

I was looking for a succinct way to say something similar.

I typically tip 20% for a cab. It depends though. There are various factors in the rounding process. If the cabbie is friendly, I'm on vacation, it's late at night and I brought the guy out of the way, I will round it up more.

Once in Vegas I'm in a cab with a coworker and we're making conversation with the cabbie. I say we're from New York and he tells me that New Yorkers don't tip well. I ask him what does he think is a good tip. He said 50%. We laughed. He got 20%, he deserved less for trying to be greedy.

Another time I fell for the cabbie taking me via the tunnel. I was tired and told the guy to take to the Venetian the quickest way. Once I realized what he did I knew I was f***ed. Later I asked another cabbie what it should have cost me, etc. Sure enough I payed way too much. The 2nd cabbie, who is black, asks me "Was the guy African?". He said the Africans do that and I could have reported him.

I haven't taken any cabs out here yet, but I did notice that everyone in town seems to be hustling for tips constantly. I went to pick up a Chicken Parm the other day and was met with "hey I put some extra cheese on that for ya chief!" as I was paying. Little things like that seem to be a constant here. I guess it's just the Vegas mentality.

That's when you say, "im lactose intolerant" and shoot down his hopes of an unreasonably large tip.

[ QUOTE ]
God, what's with all the nit responses. No, you obviously aren't obligated to tip well, but does it kill you to pay 35$ for a 30$ cab ride? Maybe I'm in the minority, but haggling over how much to tip a taxi cab driver seems like a such a trivial waste of time.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tipping 15-20% and then being harassed to give more is what the thread is about.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh ya, I can see people being pissed about being harrassed obv. I guess poker has spoiled me since I've never had to work. I usually just think of it as, "i'll just tip like 5 bucks or whatever so I can get away from the smelly ass cab and bizzare cabby and get on with whatever fun [censored] I have planned." Shrug, I should probably be smarter with money.

You can tell what someone is really like by how they treat people who are providing them with a service. People who don't tip/hate tipping, well....

Having said that, if someone starts harassing me for a tip, I won't give them a penny and I'll tell them why. If they don't harass me for it then I'm pretty generous (at least by UK standards, where there's much less of a tipping culture). Gotta spread the polite cabbie meme!

shaniac: I agree w/ most of what you have written in this thread.

daryn: Dude, it is totally standard for the waiter to ask "are you all set here?" or "do you need change?" or to say "i'll be back with your change." The busier the restaurant, the more it makes sense for them to ask if you need change.

reno: "Thus, a $10.75 cab ride and a $12.50 cab ride both "cost" $15" WTF? No. Now, I will often tip cabbies a lot in Vegas, because I tip everyone a lot. Like, cocktail waitresses, I tip them $5/drink standard. But, whatever, it's Vegas and I'm overtipping on purpose. Really, your statement makes no sense at all. How did you arbitrarily come up w/ $5 as the increment of cash that counts? Why don't they both cost $20? You are making absolutely no sense at all. What if you just have a $20 and the cab fare is $10 or $14. How much change do you ask for in each of those situations? Or do you just give him $20?

Nate: My standard cab tip is round up to the dollar then add a dollar. So, $6.30 and $6.90 both get $8. When a cab ride is over $10, I'll usually go to the round number closest to 15-20%. A $50 airport ride gets $60, for example. I've taken thousands of cab rides and never had a cabbie in SF, Vegas, or NYC complain.

When I'm running hot I tip good and buy everyone drinks n'[censored]. When I'm on a downswing I'm nitty as hell with my tips.

The exception to this is like say I brought $1k to the casino and I have some small amount like $50 left. Then basically the last thing I need to buy for the night (either food or a cab) I'll just drop the 50 and complete the night's debacle.
