I dunno about best because I know very little about drummers but I saw Steve Smith on Thursday and he [censored] ruled. Theres no good YouTube to show it, but he is absolutely incredible. If anyone knows what Mr. High Hat is and can explain it better than I can, he did that. He's definitely in the tops for living drummers.

Didn't Dave Grohl play drums for queens of the stone age, or was that only a guest appearance? Pretty darn sure he toured with them. [/ QUOTE ] He did tour with them, but just temporarily. He was the drummer for the song "No One Knows", which has a sick drum solo. But as for overall best drummer of all time, no. Grohl is definitely expert at a lot of instruments. |

stewart copeland is a very underrated rock drummer, listening to live stuff from The Police really impresses on you how talented those guys were. [/ QUOTE ] Stewart has an internal clock problem, he always speeds the songs up mid-way when performing live. The Police broke up in part due to Sting's complaints about Stewart's playing. Studio guys whose names you'd never know float around LA, London, Nashville, New York, Tokyo...they charge 5-grand per track, fly into town to do 25 tracks in three days...they've got three or four kits in each city, a drum tech and logistics guy who takes one kit to one studio while said pro is doing a session at another studio...they show up, listen to the track one time, walk in the room, nail it AT MOST two takes, grab their check, and go onto the next session. Many of them are ghost-players for big-time bands whose drummers are part of the image and writing team of the band but who cannot lay down serious-level studio drums to save their lives. I've worked with such drummers...they're a site to behold, they make boatloads of money, they can play any style and play it at a world-class level instantly and consistently, nobody knows their names, and they don't give a crap. I have no idea who the best of the best in that realm is. [/ QUOTE ] I listed a few of them in my list, some of today's better known session guys include Sterling Cambel and Nir Z on the east coast. And contrary to opinion these guys usually rent their rigs for sessions from a studio drum tech such as Artie Gold. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

Bill Bruford deserves to be mentioned. [/ QUOTE ] No he doesn't. Work with him on a Yes album like I did and you will change your mind. We had to quantize his MIDI kit and re-record his cymbals using a session musician so his ego wasn't hurt. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

[ QUOTE ] Ginger Baker (of Cream fame) [/ QUOTE ] nice, the first name I thought of. [/ QUOTE ] I've worked with Ginger, I love the guy, but he should be off the list if Moon or Bonhan are on it. Its close however. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
