First one that came to mind was The Wonder Years theme song. (Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From my Friends).
The Sopranos theme song is a great [censored] song, but i think some of its "magic" needs to be attributed to the fantastic "cut scene" or whatever its called.
The theme song from the first season of the wire is also excellent.
