Isn't money simply the most liquid asset in an economy? If U.S. Dollars go the way of the dodo, whatever is currently the 2nd most liquid asset takes its place. Probable a bitch during the transition period, but not civilization collapsing. In fact, they're already using cell phone minutes instead of government issued dollars in Kenya and Tanzania.

how would we pay for utilities? and when people barter for consumable goods... many people who dont/cant produce anything will be broke pretty fast...
