Re: Property: What Can You Buy For $500,000?
you dont get much in munich, germany: 125 m2 in 4,5 rooms for 370.000 EUR. (it is as small as it looks)
better, but a lot of work: croatia, istria, build 1863, 330 m2 living space on 3000 m2 ground with view to the sea for 350.000 EUR. ( and i am sure that you can find easily something better than that) |

Re: Property: What Can You Buy For $500,000?
How is texas so cheap?
I mean it has several huge cities, some of which have headquarters of nice businesses, and a stream of illegals coming over the boarder. Are house prices going to skyrocket in the next 5 years? Also how do new homeowners afford to live in the SF Bay Area? I mean my house is prolly in the 1.8m-2.1m neighborhood, but thats b/c my parents bought it 20 years ago when prices were not insane. |

Interest-only ARM's. I'm pretty sure many of them are just renting the lifestyle, not building any equity.

How is texas so cheap? I mean it has several huge cities, some of which have headquarters of nice businesses, and a stream of illegals coming over the boarder. [/ QUOTE ] Lots and lots of open land and the cities spread out like crazy. There are some more expensive neighborhoods, but if you want a cheap house you can buy a mansion in the suburbs for pennies. They just keep adding more suburbs to the outside of the cities. [ QUOTE ] Are house prices going to skyrocket in the next 5 years? [/ QUOTE ] They already are starting to in some parts of Austin. [ QUOTE ] Also how do new homeowners afford to live in the SF Bay Area? I mean my house is prolly in the 1.8m-2.1m neighborhood, but thats b/c my parents bought it 20 years ago when prices were not insane. [/ QUOTE ] People buy house-shares of some kind now. It's pretty awful. One of the more creative ways is to get a pool of investors together to buy a property, then you get to live in it and pay "rent" to the investment company (which you are part of). But yeah basically only people with Google options are buying houses. |

So, seriously as a US citizen can I buy a house somewhere in Scandinavia and live there? It looks beautiful and cheap. I know it gets cold but it can't be worse than Montana or something.

[/ QUOTE ] it is, and it isn't. i can drive 10 minutes from here and there's a neighborhhod called highland park, which is huge, and most homes are around $1M-$3M, and then next to it is university park, and homes are around $1M there, too. in east dallas you can get a nice 2,000 sq. ft home in a good area for $275,000. if you go to the suburbs you can find some where you'll get a 4000 sq. ft home on 1-5 acres for $500,000. it's easy to spend $350,000 on a home in dallas these days, and plenty of $1M homes, too. |
