Re: Chris Benoit and Wife found dead
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I don't see how one could be at fault for believing that someone was a "good person" when one has heard no evidence to the contrary. [/ QUOTE ] Without any evidence, why have any opinion in the first place? [/ QUOTE ] I said no evidence to the contrary. Prior to this event, I had heard many good things about Chris Benoit. [/ QUOTE ] That's the critical presumption: That you had much access to the truth of the matter. No evidence to the contrary is still no evidence. Everything around stars is a massive publicity machine. I'm reminded of Rock Hudson, that skirt-chaser. [/ QUOTE ] You're being too nitty here Blarg. Is it so wrong to say that it doesn't seem like so and so would do something like this without saying "ZOMG but you didn't KNOW that person." What about the wrestlers who were friends with him for years who are shocked by this? How well do you have to know someone before you "earn the right" to be legitimately shocked when they kill someone? [/ QUOTE ] You're not getting the point either. The critical thing is you, or the other posters here, DID NOT KNOW this guy. Not at all. It's not like what you read was incomplete. That's not the issue at all. The issue is that what you knew was crafted. You "knew" an image carefully crafted for his career by people who were paid to do it, and by himself too if he had even half a brain. You don't know more about anything by following what media outlets have to say. Everybody all along the line is getting paid. You expect much worth hearing to come out of that? |

Re: Chris Benoit and Wife found dead
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I'd just like to add that Regal (whatever his 1st name is) is very underrated imo. [/ QUOTE ] How can you be "underrated" or "overrated" or rated at all in a "sport" where every outcome is determined by other people, before you even step on the mat? [/ QUOTE ] With his in ring talent, he should have more fans/more wins is what the guy meant. Regal, Bret and Owen Hart, CM Punk, Malenko, and Benoit were considered underrated (A lot of talent in ring, not very big in terms of titles/wins). Hogan and Cena are the opposite. It's like how certain actors are underrated, they always give great performances, yet they're not headlining the movie for others reasons. |

[/ QUOTE ] I actually agree with your post. I think a similar comparison could be made to sports. Obviously sports media>wrestling media and we may get a SLIGHTLY better grasp of what kind of person our sports heroes are just because they have much more exposure. Still, we never really know. Kirby Puckett would be an example of someone who had a crafted image of being a great guy but turned out to be something different than what we thought. It's like saying, which NBA player would you be more shocked to here kill someone: Shaquille O'Neal or Ron Artest? None of us really know either guy deep down, but based on years of what we've read about these guys, obviously we know the answer (to which would shock us more, not necessarily which is more likely). I'm not comparing Benoit to either of these guys. Personally, Benoit would have been somewhere in the middle of my official "Wrestlers who I think would be most like to kill their families based on what I've read/heard people say about them taking into account that much of that stuff is BS anyway and no one really knows the truth" rankings. I hope that kind of made sense. |

[/ QUOTE ] I understand the point you're trying to make, but I think the problem in your analysis is the comparison between the normal sports media and wrestling media. Where wrestling media have a vested interest in perpetuating whatever storyline/persona the WWE is trying to advance for a particular performer, the real sports media has no such motivation. If anything, the opposite is true--real sports media can advance their careers and break big stories by revealing dirt on professional athletes in real sports. Maybe it doesn't even come down to the media covering the particular athletes/actors--maybe the difference is that one group covers fictional, scripted events, while the other covers an actual competitive sport that is reality. |
