37 (par 35). Tees were way up, which was nice. Only took 16 putts - good for me - plus two more putters from the fringe.

Shot 82. Good thing is that I won $15. Could have lost $100+ if the two other people I was playing with made birdie putts on 18. We were playing the 9 game and at the end it was $3 a point. If you beat both guys by two shots, you win $54 on one hole.

Wolf at Paiute. 48-52 in a gale. Played really well, no triples+ at all until the end but a 9 on the last hole did me in.

Yesterday I took part in a tournament at the goofy but unquestionably beautiful Hassayampa Country Club, upstate in Prescott. With highs in the mid-90s in Phoenix, it was a perfect 75-80 there.

The course is overlaid on a previous nine hole muni course, with most of the goofy holes existing between 1-7 and the final hole. The course also features probably the best clubhouse I've ever been in, even though there are no doubt finer ones that won't let me in the door.

I don't know much about the stimpmeter but they were very VERY fast greens. Thankfully Weiskopf, unlike most other designers, prefers flat greens with subtle breaks. I played with an old friend of mine who plays on the mini tours and we went on a sick run where he birdied 5 and 6, I birdied 7 and 8, he followed with birdies on 9 and 10, I birdied 11, but the magic ran out after we had very makable putts on the difficult 12th but misread both of them.

It was handicapped, however, and we finished one spot out of the money at -10, two shots behind third and four shots clear of the two-way tie for first which featured two of our buddies, so good for them. However, I was drunk and for some reason ended up buying one of them drinks at Kevin O'Donnell's bar (Kevin was there too, busing tables oddly enough, and we talked with him for a bit). We got fairly wasted, good for him since he has a young kid and doesn't get out much...

Some friends and I drove up to Prescott one day while I was in Phoenix. I think it was called Prescott Lakes.? We were the only ones there because the wind was blowing 40-50mph. It was about this time of year. Like you said, the greens were so [censored] fast!!! I've never played such unbelieveable greens before. It was seriously like putting on linoleum (sp?). I really liked it up there and will definitely go back some day. How many courses are up there? Have you played them all tuq?

westhoff,

Oddly, Prescott is a golf mecca of sorts. There are low-end courses like Prescott Country Club and a nearby par-3 course whose name escapes me. There is also Antelope Hills, which has two courses that are among the best munis in the country, as well as Stoneridge, a fairly new daily fee that is definitely a weird course but which is kept in shape.

That leaves the three private courses. Talking Rock, located out past everything, is a course in great shape and with pretty awesome views, but just not gifted with the same piece of land that the others have. Hassayampa is the least fair of all the Prescott courses but it probably features the richest membership and easily the best clubhouse.

Which leaves Prescott Lakes. Probably among my 2-3 favorite courses anywhere, it went private a couple of years ago and broke my heart in the process. Unlike the Weiskopf layout, this Hale Irwin track features greens with a LOT of undulation. That's the one thing I don't like - you really can't cut those greens too low because there are so many breaks on the greens that you can get totally effed on the wrong side of most of them.

My favorite nine ever happened on Prescott Lakes, when I shot a 5-under 31 and responded with a 5-over 41 on the back. I birdied 1, 4, 6, 7, and 9, managing to only par both of the par-5s. I also birdied the tenth to get me to -6, and after a lame par on the easy par-5 eleventh proceeded to give all six shots back over the next five holes in a series of bizarre events. To my credit I parred the final two holes to finish even and cap a pretty awesome round.

Lol, I kinda did the same thing at Prescott Lakes. Like I said, it was very windy. And I grew up in Kansas, so when I say it was windy, it was [censored] howling. I shot 39 on the front (other 7 guys all shot 50+) then something in the 50s on the back. It's definitely in the top 3 courses I've played.
