[ QUOTE ] i don't know how you can take NL2 seriously. [/ QUOTE ] Some of use started out with really small rolls and therefore had to start small. If 2NL is all you have experience with, you take it seriously. Show some love to those just starting out. [/ QUOTE ] even when i first started, I had to care about the money at stake in order to play well. |

I don't care about any amount I make at 2nl, I care about becoming a winning player so that when I do up the stakes I don't spew. I also played play chips for a while to get the basics of bankroll management down. |

[/ QUOTE ] even when i first started, I had to care about the money at stake in order to play well. [/ QUOTE ] I think this kind of thinking can get you into trouble. I cashed out a lot of my roll about 4 weeks ago and have been working my back up starting at 25nl as a learning exercise. The money at that stake basically felt like play money to me. Still taking every hand seriously and playing your A game is important. The ability to move up and down with bankroll fluctuations is really beneficial for a serious player, and one I used to struggle with. Chasing losses at current stakes when good bankroll management dictates dropping down for a bit is a huge leak in any player's mental game - and the feeling that the money at the lower stakes is insignificant and difficult to take seriously can be a big contributor to that. Not saying you necessarily fall into this trap, just the post got me thinking. |

Re: **Official uNL Microbrew thread: May**
just changed 2+2 to my homepage - living where i live theres virtually no scope for any form of meaningful poker discussion (we dont have a single card room or casino and none of my friends take poker seriously) so this site is real important to my poker playing in that respect so cheers to everyone for making it what it is.
a few questions also: 1) is it possible to get poker grapher to chart multiple screenames under one graph and if so then how#? 2) whats the quality of clothing like from the full tilt store? 3)how many fingers am i holding up? |

If 2NL is all you have experience with, you take it seriously. Show some love to those just starting out. [/ QUOTE ] even when i first started, I had to care about the money at stake in order to play well. [/ QUOTE ] This is a leak. Not just in poker, but in a lot of areas of life. I remember back when I was learning to fight and the person teaching me made it a point to get in my face and chew me out every single time that I failed to treat a sparring match as seriously as a real life and death fight (within the parameters necessary for safety. Permanently crippling a friend for the purpose of practice is problematic to say the least). Fractured knuckle? Keep going, in the real thing the guy won't stop if you call time. Assume that your opponent won because that hit probably would have crippled or killed you if it hadn't been pulled? You can assume your dead if God tells you in person. It would suck to give a real opponent an opening just because you trained yourself to treat every smack in the nose like a successful tiger strike. The key issue is that how you train determines how you do in the real situation. If you are playing 2NL only for entertainment, feel free to not take it seriously. If you are playing to win, you need to treat every hand like it matters, especially if you are new and learning. In addition, one of the keys to poker is to learn to think in abstractions like "big blinds", "EV", or "ratio of pot size relative to the effective stack sizes". It shouldn't matter if the big blind is $.02 or $2000. You should be training yourself to view your decisions through these abstractions and therefore learn to make clear decisions without thinking things like "If I lose this pot, I lose more than I used to make in a week". |
