They are running the free ski promo this year again. Free lift tickets until some date in November. Call them.

Crested Butte is cool and I have done lots of work out there. It is remote.

The locals will be restless if the tourism biz ever slows down.

The biggest problem with CB is that it's about 80% dudes. You will almost never see a single woman out at a bar and if you do, she is surrounded by 8 [censored] with beards. Other than that, it rules.

There is always the Asheville, NC area. Yeah Asheville itself doesn't fit your criteria but the surrounding area is tremendous. I went to school at the nearby Mars Hill College, and the surrounding towns are great places to visit. From Weaverville to Burnsville.

Eh, just throwing it out there.

Lack of a snobby vibe, lack of urban sprawl and ordinances against chain stores are mutually exclusive from both laid back vibe and towns with real character.

lack of a snobby vibe is also mutually exclusive of ordinances against chain stores.

damn you guys are making me want to move to a mountain town, but I would probably get beat up by the locals for not skiing, biking, or having a beard

Im not sure that any of those are "required"....I can think of a few artists/writers that live there solely for the beauty. However if youve never tried skiing or riding you are def missing out.
