If we score 21 points, I'll say, "whoa, we scored a lot of points." 21 points is a lot, 30 points isn’t a football game. That's Arena Football. We're talking about real football. -Herm 9/4/07

That quote is so retarded I'm inclined to ask for a link

[/ QUOTE ]LOL. Well, he WAS a defensive player and coached under Dungy in Tampa. Clearly loves to run ball--ask Martin and LJ. I think this is how these teams made playoffs. Ball control. Win close games. Does anyone really think Jets that made playoffs under Herm or Chiefs last season with Huard were very good personnel wise? Like, making playoffs and even winning twice good? His teams like always in playoffs.

Jets missed playoffs twice under Herm unless I am missing something. Both times Pennington missed significant time. This year his QB is Damon Huard.

The problem with this thread is that most (if not all) of us are only qualified to call a coach out for obvious game management/time out situations and replay challenge errors. This is the stuff that is easy to bitch about from home but its such a small part of being a head coach in the grand scheme of things.

This leads armchair coaches to deride a guy like Herman Edwards while totally overlooking the fact that he has taken some pretty weak teams into the playoffs.

Totally agree.

Coughlin probably isn't the worst, but I don't understand how a red ass dude like him keeps getting hired in this century.

Rich Kotite and it's not even close.

I didn't see "worst current nfl head coach".

In that case, I think Wayne Fontes is kinda close.

I bring up Kotite because of his "it was raining heavily at the time and I couldn't read the 2pt conversion chart" which pretty much started the laminated chart standard.

And his two seasons with the Jets (3-13, 1-15) before Parcells turned it around.

Fontes at least had an NFC title game appearance, but worst coach? Meh. Mediocre? Probably more like it.

I always liked that he manned up and admitted what happened, and then was smart enough to solve it next week with lamentation. So many NFL head coachs are too stubborn to admit when then do something very dumb.

No doubt that Kotite was an awful head coach though.

I'll second the nomination of the coach who said "you play to win the games". He amuses me a lot.
