ariel, what would your reaction be upon realizing that you'd signed up for a sng then forgot about it? would it be to expect a refund from the other player? or would it be to think to yourself something along the lines of, "f me, i'm such a fkin idiot"; accept responsibility for your own carelessness, and move on?

personally, getting a refund from the other guy would never even cross my mind.

ya same here, ive never played a sng tho so ettiquette could be diff afaik

i wouldn't EXPECT a refund because i realize the majority of players (as is shown by this thread) wouldn't think to give one. i would think i deserve a refund but wouldn't look down on the guy for not giving one because i realize that people just tend to be misguided about this situation.

as for the accepting responsibility: this is so silly. it's not as if the punishment for carelessness should be -5k. there's a logical leap between points a (yeah that was my fault) and b (i shouldn't get my money back).

seems to me the punishment for signing up and forgetting about a $10 sng is -$10; the punishment for signing up and forgetting about a $200 sng is -$200; the punishment for signing up and forgetting about a $5,000 sng is -$5,000; and so on.

mike,

are you just making posts like this to tilt me? you're right that the punishment IS the buy-in, but that's just a trivial fact with no moral impact. the question is whether that SHOULD be the punishment

honestly, this is like ethics 101

imo, well, yes. why shouldn't it? you said the punishment for carelessness shouldn't be $5,000, but why not? i think the punishment for being careless about $5,000 should be, well, the loss of $5,000. and the punishment for being careless about some lesser (or greater) amount of money should be that lesser (or greater) amount.

i missed that class. still, i like to think i'm an ethical person, and i try to act ethically in my poker dealings. i guess my standard is this: since i wouldn't ask for or expect the 5k to be returned to me, on the other side i would also feel no obligation to return it.

Wow, fun thread.

I totally agree with FWF in this thread about the general ethical issue.

But what I super-totally agree with is his point about not giving the guy a partial refund.

Giving a partial refund seems completely sleazy to me... it's like a sickening combination of greed and hypocrisy and moral vanity.

I would much rather someone either take the high road and give a full refund, or have the strength of character to admit that they put their self-interest above common notions of fairness and decency.

I also agree with EM2 that asking for the money is a little gay, but then people have gone gay for a lot less than $5k.

The real issue is the people who would ask for the money back, you are only one step above begging for change by asking for your money back in this spot imo. Iv done this more than once and never thought once to ask for the money back personally I find the idea shame full, if you dislike being without the money so much be more care full next time.

yea, i would never think to ask for my money back if this happened to me. which i guess is why i wouldnt return it. strange issue to get so passionate about fwf considering it will likely never happen to you.

I agree with mikech.

It's not a punishment though. It's simply the price of forgetting.

i agree w/ jfish. i like to be as ethical as i can in all aspects of life and poker, but i wouldnt expect back the $ if i signed up for a hu sng and left and i wouldnt give it back if someone else did it. i dont think its the same as someone dropping a chip in a casino; its much closer to being the same as a a misclick.
