Re: Oh Canada! Let\'s get rid of the income tax.
Taxation implies spending will occur. Spending can help things.
[ QUOTE ] Well then why don't you try addressing the point, in my OP [/ QUOTE ] I did. I addressed: "It is a myth that the welfare state benefits the poor" By showing that there appears to be a correlation between high taxation and low poverty in the western world You then made the erroneous assumption that increasing GDP/c necessarily decreases poverty which promted me to talk "about some hypothetical rich western nation where half the population makes a dollar a day" to illustrate the point |

Re: Oh Canada! Let\'s get rid of the income tax.
"
By showing that there appears to be a correlation between high taxation and low poverty in the western world " LOL. Well of course correlation is not proof of anything... there are also tons of countries with high taxation and high poverty... maybe you should just say there is a correlation between being in the Western world and not being in poverty? "You then made the erroneous assumption that increasing GDP/c necessarily decreases poverty" How silly of me to think that when everyone gets poorer there's more poverty. Thankfully you are here to argue against that! " which promted me to talk "about some hypothetical rich western nation where half the population makes a dollar a day" to illustrate the point " And I've been hopelessly confused ever since. |

Well, this is perhaps the problem you arent seeing. If the average of a group of numbers decreases, it does not mean that ALL numbers must decrease. Thus, simply because GDP/c goes down, doesnt imply that "everyone gets poorer" |

LOL. Well of course correlation is not proof of anything [/ QUOTE ] you linked an article IN THIS THREAD that talked about the correlation between free market thinking in sweeden and an increase in the economy as evidence for free market thinking being good for the economy. But, again, if the emperical evidence fits what you want it to, then Im sure its relevant. |

Of course. "simply because GDP/c goes down, doesnt imply that "everyone gets poorer"" of course... Would you like to point out some other things that I didn't say and how they're wrong? |

The data you did attempt to show was easily proven to not support your conclusion. Now you've rightfully abandoned this data, leaving your OP again with no support. So, care to try again? |

Re: Oh Canada! Let\'s get rid of the income tax.
Or are you debating that when the GDP/c goes down there's more poverty? Maybe not 100% of the time, but 99% or 98% of the time?

" How silly of me to think that when everyone gets poorer there's more poverty." Are you debating this statement? [/ QUOTE ] No. Im debating the statement that "a loss in GDP/c" implies that "everyone gets poorer". Again, please define what you mean by "everyone gets pooer" |
