I am in your boat, El D. Is this strange? Why is that?

Blarg,

"I think a lot more people would like tomatoes more if they got them fresh from a farm or grew them. The ones in the supermarkets taste like almost nothing, and sometimes have a really mushy, unappealing texture. Yecch."

Definitely, definitely true. Fresh tomatoes, both regular and heirloom, are completely different than what you can get at Safeway (or whatever large grocery store). Good tomatoes from someplace like Whole Foods, or even better a farmer's market, are something everyone should try before deciding whether or not they like raw tomatoes.

All,

Anyone ever have bloody marys from Vegas casinos? Do Bellagio or Mandalay Bay make decent ones?

El D,

I am in 100% agreement with your original post. Over the years I have been heckled many times for drinking mimosas at brunch.

I adore vodka.

I adore tomatoes, quite literally my favorite fruit/vegetable.

I love produce in general.

I can't drink a V8 with out an overwhelming urge to vomit.

When I was young there were many food stuffs that I did not like. Onions, jalapeņos, squash, foi gras, sweetbreads etc. used to disgust me.

I now love all the above but would not drink tomato/V8 if I was dying of thirst in a desert.

I'm glad that someone of your sophisticated palate feels the same way I do.

Also: I once drank an entire michelada with tomato juice, but I believe I was still hammered from the night before and would have downed anything with alcohol in it.

The Mirage makes good Bloody's, specifically Patty at the pool bar and some old guy at the sports book bar. Don't know about the B or Mandalay.

I've never tried V8 (and never will) but I did have a glass of gazpacho on a trip to Spain. It was nearly vomit inducing.

I've also never had a bloody mary. After watching a bartender make a couple of them I kind of doubt that I ever will. They throw so much random crap into that glass that I just can't imagine putting it in my mouth, it's like the sausage of the alcohol world without tasting delicious.

People who articulate an opinion without having experienced the subject deserve ridicule. It's like you're talking just to hear yourself speak.

In my opinion, when you have nothing else to do that day, there are few things in this world better than a good Bloody Mary for breakfast. My family serves them Christmas morning.

Most of all, I am surprised nobody has mentioned tomato beers yet. A case of the cheapest light beer sold coupled with a can of V8 make for a tasty tailgate party. Off the top of my head, the recipe is about seven parts beer, one part tomato juice.

Olive quality is often very poor at the casinos, which is a huge problem. A mushy olive can ruin an otherwise quality Mary. It's key to ask for a bottle of Tabasco when ordering, add enough and you can cure the worst Bloody Mary.

FYP. I'm pretty sure I could stomach chilled ferret crap if it were covered in Tobasco.
