I play 10/20 so I carry more or less what you describe. I keep my carry-around money in one pocket in a money clip and my wallet in another pocket. My poker stake I split into two zippered pockets with $700 in one and $1,000 in the other (hundreds folded in $500 groups and one $200 "group"). When I buy in 10/20 I take out one $500 group for a rack. If I need a re-buy I grab the $200 (or its good for $4/$8 Omaha if there's a wait).

I do this for several reasons. The first is that I do not want anybody to see a huge wad of bills in my wallet when I want to pay for something at a convenience store or use a credit card. The second is that I'm more worried about pickpockets than robbers. If they slice one pocket (and I wouldn't notice) they'll only get a piece of my stash. Its also more likely they'll go for the wallet (which is all replaceable). Also, if I am followed and robbed, there is a small possibility they won't have me empty all of my pockets... I have been mugged several times in NYC, though not in the last 30 years, and once they did not ask me to empty my pockets but only wanted my wallet.

At our limit, even if I score a big win, its not a lot of money compared to what many others are playing/showing at the casino. That helps me keep it in perspective. So, while I am careful, I don't think I will be targetted at the cage.

But do what you have to, in order to relieve the anxiety. I got used to it fairly quickly and now don't give it a second thought when I leave home. And I never leave my cash in a room that doesn't have a safe.

I really agree with Jeffage - if the $$ is enough to bother you, its probably more than you should be gambling with.

I also use pretty similar procedures to Rick, though its as much for convenience and speed as anything else.

"I am not wealthy and honestly barely get by in regular income compared with my expenses, and the buyin for the games I am playing now is a large amount of money to me, and not one I would be comfortable losing if I just outright lost it (not playing poker) or it was stolen."

You're playing too high. If you weren't, you wouldn't be so paranoid about carrying "large" amounts of cash. If you're barely making ends meet, you shouldn't be playing poker at all. If you feel you must, then play smaller, and thus carry around smaller amounts of cash.

I think the winning move will be to get some sort of a coin purse thing and carry chips around instead of cash. With a few flags you can have 15k in hand and they're smaller than a Zippo.

Standard wallets that fold once should be able to hold $6k or so in cash. 2k folded per side (jammed in in the middle) and then 2k in the "normal" money area. That should be fine to play up to like 40-80 or leave you just a little light for 100-200.

I appreciate all the advice, but honestly am a bit suprised / confused that several people think it means I am playing too high just because $2000 is a lot of money to me.
While it is a lot of money to me, it is all poker winnings, so it wouldn't really cause me to not be able to pay bills or anything if I lost it. I'm up $3000 playing this year in casinos and don't think it makes sense to not get that income just because my income outside of poker is not as high as I would like.

Last year I earned more gambling online than I did at my regular job, but unfortunately the stupid government put an end to my casino bonus whoring and most of my poker bonus whoring, and the limit holdem games online aren't nearly as soft as they used to be so I'm trying to play more live. I certainly don't regret paying off my home equity line of credit last year (which I had used to buy my car) with gambling winnings. I still have the line available, so there is no way I won't be able to pay my bills, though if I did lose a lot I probably would drop down some.

It is certainly a bad idea to have a significant amount of your bankroll on the table at any given time. Move down until it is not a problem to lose an entire buy in or two in one session. Down swings are inevitable in games that involve luck.

Rob - this is gambling 101 stuff which it seems you have not grasped yet. You are playing outside of your bankroll requirements, you wont find many people here that think this is wise - hence the comments your getting so far. I think your getting good advice, you should step down in limits.

I need to stop reading these threads when they come around because every one makes me a little bit more paranoid to carry around a lot of dollars in my pocket.
