This thread is incredible.

A few quick picks:

Steve Vai - Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite
Squarepusher - Port Rhombus
Steve Reich - Electric Counterpoint - Fast 1
Gustav Holst - The Planets Suite
Dizzy Gillespie - A Night in Tunisia
Iron & Wine - Naked as We Came
Tool - Forty six & two, The Pot
Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain
Aphex Twin - Flim, 4
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five

Thats enough for now...

I read a few pages, so I tried not to list anything already mentioned. Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings would definitely have been my #1 choice.

edit: Also, I recently discovered Jeff Buckley, and it saddens me that I only now found his music.

OP was asking about "songs", but since classical music has been brought up....

Beethoven's piano sonatas, such as Pathetique and Moonlight. Beautiful. The former provided the tune for Billy Joel's "This Night" from Innocent Man, among others. The Beatles played a chord progression from the latter in reverse on "Because" from the Abbey Road album, among others.

it's not the original but it's a performance that comes back to me very often:

http://www.nouvellesvagues.com/english/music.html - Guns of Brixton

especially where Camille sings the part 'his game is called surviving' for the first time

ill post more songs that fit when i think of them
