Working out is good depression therapy. The lethargy of mind and body tend to reinforce themselves. The exercise gets the juices (and endorphins) flowing. It's a start.
To the extend that your friend is using his shortness as an excuse to stop trying, he may need help beyond exercise, but that could be a great first step to get him to a place where he can take the next step. Good luck. You sound like a good friend; your friend is lucky with that.
