Re: Genral tipping advice in LV
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] When is it appropriate to tip the floor in the poker room. I have always been ??? about that... [/ QUOTE ] When and if you feel like it, thats the best time. I know its a cop-out answer, but honestly for the floor thats the best policy. Just don't tip for decisions ruled in your favor, thats rude to your opponent. [/ QUOTE ] I always just figure that they make a lot more money than dealers so I don't think I've ever tipped the floor. However, once in a while, a floorperson has been very helpful to me in executing a table change, and I thought about tipping, but wasn't planning on giving more than a dollar, and I kinda thought that giving a buck to someone that makes more money than I do would make me look like a tool/pseudo-pbigshot. One time, Eugene at HP was coming around giving out his free candy like he always does, and he decided to give me a card protector too. It was kind of a tacky item, but I took it anyway, and pulled a $1 chip to give to him, and he said "no that's not required." It was kind of awkward. I couldn't tell if he was being friendly or if he was semi-offended at being given one dollar. Anyway, I managed to get the dollar chip into his hand, but I'd prefer not to repeat the experience. Call me cheap if you want to, but I don't make a whole lot of money, and a good % of the money I do make has gone to supporting my financially challenged mother |

Re: Genral tipping advice in LV
I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus supporting tipping housekeepers as generously as you can.
Like others here, we don't have our room made up every day. So we make a point of finding the housekeeper on the first morning to let them know that we will not need service. They always appreciate knowing your intentions. That way they're sure there won't be an angry call to the front desk saying the room was neglected, hence they then leave you alone. In addition to tipping, it can be VERY helpful to the staff if you fill out a comment card if you have the time. Hotels often reward positive comments with money, time off and other perks. So it just takes a sec and it helps. |

Re: Genral tipping advice in LV
I tip practically everyone when in LV. This would be my standard list:
$5 to valet upon drop off ONLY if I then ask them to keep the car up front, otherwise $0 as I tip upon pick up. $5-$20 to the check in desk, depending on if they upgrade me and depending on their personality, efficiency, etc. The majority of the time the check in does not get tipped from me because they normally don't get tipped so they don't see to go out of the way for a tip. Room service gets $5 a day, but only left on the last day. They are just like dealers, from what I hear, and pool their tips together. The casinos I stay at usually leave envelopes for you, but if not, then I leave it on the table under my keys on my last day. Poker dealers get anywhere from $1-$5 a pot depending on the size of the pot and depending on how funny they are to me. In the pit I play $5-$10 carnival games so I play the redbirds and thus tip with the redbirds. My cocktail waitress gets $5 everytime she serves me, but that's because she brings me 2 different drinks at a time which is not allowed. My dealer will get a redbird upon a nice hit (flush, straight, trips or higher on Crazy 4 Card Poker, Let It Ride, Three Card Poker, 3-5-7) Slot attendants will get $20 from me for a minimum hand payout ($1200+) and $50-$100 for a jackpot ($4K+). With a tournament win I usually tip 10% if it's a small win 1K or less and 5% if it's a big win. Cage cashier will get a tip from me, $5-$10 if I had a really good session and if she/he is friendly. Tipping the floor in the pit is prohibited, I've tried. Valet always gets $5 from me upon pick up even if I tipped when I dropped off. Last weekend I was in Vegas and I actually kept track of the tipping I did while there and I stopped after the first day because I was scaring myself. However, it's very much worth it as it gets me the comps, free smokes, casino host, and attention I want from the coctail waitresses/pit bosses, etc. P.S. A well known tipper is known as a "George" by the employees, at least in Laughlin. My mom started dating a dealer there, she described me to him and he instantly knew me and said, "Oh yeah, she's a George, we love her". LOL @ buying "friends". T |

Re: Genral tipping advice in LV
Don't tip the floor at all, unless they do something extraordinary for you. Tip the dealers generously, they cut the floor in. Tip whoever brings you drinks/chips et cetera.

Tip the dealers generously, they cut the floor in. [/ QUOTE ] I believe this is not generally the case. Floor get a livable hourly wage, unlike dealers, and are not working for tips (though they surely appreciate them). At table games, Wynn recently started cutting the game supervisors & pit managers into the tip pool because the dealers were making substantially more than them. This was a controversial move and decidedly nonstandard. Your cocktail waitresses do tip out to their bartenders, on the other hand. |

In some joints the dealers may tip the floor out at the end of the day if they wish. It's usually no more than $5. I personally disagree with this 100% not because I'm greedy, but because they were offered and took a salaried position to supervise the dealers. Dealers should not be adding to their income as well. Just something about employees paying other employees doesn't come out right and will undoubtedly encourage favoritism and resentment. I actually tipped a floorperson in one temp job that I had and another dealer that was there was like "wtf, only $5??" (actually said this). I'm like, you're kidding right, if 20 dealers tip such a little $5 to said floor person, thats a minimum $100 on top of the pretty decent salary they are already getting + any cut of tournament tips + the tips they recieve from players. Floor said nothing. I also didn't tip out again except to the cage. But the normal is dealers keep their own in POKER only. Pit dealers have to split because it's the fairest way to go since the guy that gets lucky and gets a jamming $25 bj game could knock down $500 for the night and the guy that gets stuck on pai gow or mini bacc 4 nights a week because he knows more games, now would get screwed. In poker, all dealers have an equal shot to deal any table in the room based on how the lineup is drawn and they all deal the same games, so it's up to each of them to make their own $. |

Have you considered that you are paying way more in tips than many of those comps would have cost you? Everyone should tip what they feel like but your range is over the average players' tipping range. As an example I always valet and pink ticket it (have them park it close) and I have never felt obligated to tip them in advance. I tip when they bring my car around fast because they parked it close. You're tipping double for the same service. |

I'm usually a pretty good tipper but I've never tipped a floor person just because I never really see a good opportunity to. [/ QUOTE ] Once i had to leave the table for one reason or another so i ask the floor what is the longest they will leave my chips on the table. He says 30 minutes, i toss him a 5$ chip and said how about now, he said "see you when u get back". |
