I missed the part when he says he always was the lord thing. I did notice the part of him changing the name in order not to embarass his family. The reason I ask was to see if anyone knew how wealthy his family was. Thanks for the reply.

I didn't catch it the first time either, but yeah he was wealthy before the movie began. when he show's up at Borden's prison, Borden says "you're Lord Whatever?" and Angier says "I always was". also there's an earlier reference to this when Angier and his wife are talking about how he changed his name so he wouldn't embarrass his family.
