All,

While New Coke is the obvious winner here, I think the McDLT deserves a mention.

[/ QUOTE ]
I didn't even remember this until you mentioned it. I do remember the McLean Deluxe and everyone who tried it thinking that it was awful.

Man, McDonald's has had some poorly-conceived ideas over the years, huh?

I always heard that what killed Betamax was that porn went on VHS. Since people couldn't get porn on Betamax, the sheer volume of porn being bought on VHS put Betamax too far behind to catch up.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's a well-known rumor, but I think it's false. I distinctly remember a friend of mine testing a 10+ year old betamax player that he found at a yard sale. He tested it with the only beta tapes he had--porn.

I have found the following snopes thread, also:

New Coke was a disaster of gargantuan proportions, compared to Crystal Pepsi. Coca-Cola had pretty much mortgaged the future on it, and it wasn't just that it didn't sell (which is what happened to Crystal Pepsi). Rather, people actively hated on it and left the Coke company for different brands, it was the butt of jokes on the news for months, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow. If you and TT argued about the correct answer to a true/false question I think the universe would explode.

Seconded, most people here are too young to remember this. But it was probably the most marketed mcdonalds product ever. Probably set the environment back 10 years with all the extra styrofoam, which McDonalds got ridbut quite possibly may have been the reason why mcd's ceased the use of styrofoam.

On a burger nerd note, it is really weird howe very burger mcdonalds creates that includes tomato fails. (Arch Deluxe/MBX/Big N Tasty)

Also, recognize this guy?

I'm going to go with the silicone breast implant. All the lawsuits caused the bankruptcy of Dow Chemical! *

* even though there was never any real proof the implants caused any health problems... in fact, the FDA recently re-approved them for use. The trial lawyers are not planning to give back the money, however.

what killed betamax is that the tapes only could record for 60 minutes instead of 120, but porn did have a lot to do with it according to modern marvels "techonolgy of the 80s".

Speaking of Dreamcast, did anyone else's dreamcast just stop working a couple years ago? My friends and I all had dreamcasts and they all stopped working at about the same time, so we all joked there was some kind of virus that had affected them all and they all got "sick".

[/ QUOTE ]

We still have our Dreamcast hooked up and still play it every so often. The best part of the system is it's ability to play games from older systems. We have discs with 100's of old Nintendo/Sega games that we play through the Dreamcast. Plus, Crazy Taxi and 7th Cross are excellent games. Ok, 7th Cross maybe not so much.
