[ QUOTE ]
I have no great love for the Doors but I don't let my personal tastes cloud my judgement. [/ QUOTE ] So? [ QUOTE ] Morrison is a decent singer, a great lyricist (though hardly a poet), and a charismatic stage presence. [/ QUOTE ] You have it backwards. Morrison has a great voice and his lyrics are average at best. What's his greatest lyrical accomplishment? "LA Woman?" "Five to One?" Decent songs but not remarkable for their lyrics. [ QUOTE ] Perhaps they didn't change much or grow musically but I think that's because they were very adventurous right from the start which therefore limits your ability to expand. [/ QUOTE ] Right. That's why Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, VU, Steely Dan, et al pretty much stayed the same. All innovative bands make one change and then stick with it for their entire careers. The Doors had one interesting aspect, musically - Manzarek. They sounded different because their lineup was different. Krieger and Densmore are solid musicians but they were generally not featured prominently. |

![]() I just can't bring myself to put the Pixies (2 great albums) or NMH (1 great album, though arguably one of the greatest ever) in there. Though that means I should probably take VU out, too. Pearl Jam = Generic arena rock, even if they are pretty good at it. Really, how many lost brain cells are these guys away from becoming Creed? RHCP = From bad party rock to a couple of decent albums, to ripping off Tom Petty and becoming almost adult contemporary, this is the best we have to offer? Nirvana = Just not enough time to know for sure. They still hadn't broken out of the Pixies/Melvins mold yet, though they were starting to. Metallica = This is a joke, right? If I were to include a major 90's band it would be the Smashing Pumpkins. CCR has about a gabillion great songs, and I guess that should be enough, but.... I used to adore the Doors, but then I grew up. Revised: Beach Boys Sonic Youth REM The Smashing Pumpkins VU |
