As a right wing conservative Christian, wtf are you doing playing poker?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why not? There's nothing in the bible against gambling.

[/ QUOTE ]

they glorify it. they even tossed dice to see who got Jesus' loincloth as he hung there on that stick.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's why its looked down on by conservative Christians. Imagine if this happened today, the loin clothes would hit eBay, and they would want to ban that too...

You make an excellent point.

And yet, at the same time, there are other things that are not explicitly banned in the Bible, yet right wing conservative Christians try to impose their will on American society in those areas.

I was just making a final w/d from Canbet, which banned US players, in their live chat. After he took care of my w/d, I said I will be back if they ever take US players again. He said "I reckon things will change within the next 6 months and they will accept US players again".

I think the live help guy knows some insider info we don't.

[/ QUOTE ]

Live help guys almost never know insider info of this caliber. Hell, they barely know info at times.

Way to group all Christians into one camp. If you've never noticed, there are many different types of Christian religions and they all believe different things. Imagine that....different groups believe different things.

Um, duh. I'm just responding to one individual who self-identified as "right wing conservative Christian", and I responded in reference to right wing conservative Christians, not to "those who practice a Christian faith". You'll have to help me identify where in any of my posts I ever lumped all those who believe in Jesus Christ into one camp, because there sure as heck doesn't appear to be any text like that in existence here at 2+2, at least not by me.

FWIW - I am a Conservative Christian Republican, and I LOVE poker.
It drives me nuts that Conservative Christians are a driving force behind legislating personal morality. I have no problem 'legislating morality' when it's protecting citizens. For example 'Thou shalt not Kill' is a pretty good candidate.
But a true 'Conservative' wants a smaller government with less tax and less big government programs. Well - in my way of thinking, smaller government also applies to legislation aimed at protecting people from themselves. Unnecessary and intrusive.
The only argument that I've ever heard that even comes close to being any good is that gambling ruins lives, and it can hurt innocent children who are stuck with a parent addicted to gambling. Well, that is true. But with legalization and regulation the government could be in a position to identify those situations and do something to protect the children. e.g. limit the amount of loss a player can take based on wealth and dependants.
And I'm sure that this an even bigger problem with alcohol, so why is that legal? Because the vast majority of us can enjoy alcohol without abusing it or ruining ours or our children’s lives. Just the same with Poker, undoubtedly even more so.
(note that I don't care if you ruin your own life, and I don't think the government should care so much either, only when that affects innocent citizens (the children of addicts)).

Solid point. I've asked a family member of mine this question before.

Find me something in the bible that says anything about gambling.....then if you can't find that, explain to me how some interpretation of the bible (the deadly sin of greed being the most commonly used) applies to gambling, but not to other things, like being a business man trying to make a million dollars.

Before I got into the gambling business, I asked many people this question.....

No one has a good answer.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is patently not true. The Bible does mention gambling a couple of times. The most pertinent is in Joshua 18.

Here it is:

1 After they had subdued the land, the whole community of the Israelites assembled at Shiloh, where they set up the meeting tent.

2 Seven tribes among the Israelites had not yet received their heritage.

3 Joshua therefore said to the Israelites, "How much longer will you put off taking steps to possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?

4 Choose three men from each of your tribes; I will commission them to begin a survey of the land, which they shall describe for purposes of inheritance. When they return to me

5 you shall divide it into seven parts. Judah is to retain its territory in the south, and the house of Joseph its territory in the north.

6 You shall bring here to me the description of the land in seven sections. I will then cast lots for you here before the LORD, our God.

7 For the Levites have no share among you, because the priesthood of the LORD is their heritage; while Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received the heritage east of the Jordan which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave them."

8 When those who were to map out the land were ready for the journey, Joshua instructed them to survey the land, prepare a description of it, and return to him; then he would cast lots for them there before the LORD in Shiloh.

9 So they went through the land, listed its cities in writing in seven sections, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh.

10 Joshua then divided up the land for the Israelites into their separate shares, casting lots for them before the LORD in Shiloh.

The two bolded quotes are the most relevant. Lots (random chance) were used to redistribute wealth (land). The Holy Land, no less. This is gambling. Condoned and before the eyes of God. Black and white right there in the Good Book.

For some reason this is ignored when discussing the "evils" of gambling.

Anyway, carry on with the Barney Frank love fest.
