Why didn't they just give 7/119 to Beltran??

[/ QUOTE ]

It doesn't matter how much the Astros offered Beltran. The Astros were being used in negotiations. Beltran never had any intention of re-signing.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was clear that Beltran was going to the highest bidder.

7/$119 and $0.01 probably would have gotten him.

I'm aware. He's still

a) gonna make up some of that ground
b) make up some ground in defense and baserunning.

He only needs to make up 5 runs. You don't think he already does that in D/baserunning? We're talking about one of the fattest guys in the league.

[/ QUOTE ]

PMR had lee at like -20 runs last year. Bad outfielders crush a team as flyballs tend to be xbh or outs. Lee won't get to a lot of balls.....

Wrong. Beltran was going to New York. End of discussion. No matter what demands the Astros met in negotiations there was always something else. When Beltran signed with the Mets he said the deal breaker with the Astros was that they wouldn't offer him a no trade clause. That's funny, because the Astros say that a no trade clause wasn't even mentioned by Beltran's people during the negotiations.

If you take into account Texas' lack of income tax vs New York State, the Astros offer was actually higher.

Beltran wanted to go to New York, preferably the Yankees. When the Yankees weren't interested Boras worked to get the Mets interested and involved. The Astros were only used to get the largest offer they could from NY.

Does this mean that Hunter Pence won't get a shot to play with the big club next year?

C Lee goes yard thrice tonight driving in 6 in the Astros 9-6 win over Philly. One to right, one to left, one to dead center. Wheeler strikes out side in 9th for save.
