Re: Is there really such thing as a \"self-less\" act?

[ QUOTE ] Organ donation. After death. [/ QUOTE ] At first I thought we had a winner. Then I realized you have to CHOOSE to be an organ donor. Therefore you are aware your organs are going to be donated. Very grey area.. Might count though. [/ QUOTE ] What if you have to choose to not be a donor? I think an apathetic person could commit many "self-less" acts every single day. |

One time I gave someone a gift, but I knew they wouldn't take it if it was from me, so I said it wasn't. I guess this was selfish somehow though, lol.

[/ QUOTE ] Most, if not all, people get joy out of giving gifts to people. Therefore, by knowing the person accepted the gift you got the satisfaction of giving this person a gift. Unless, by giving this person the gift made you feel horrible. In which case it may be selfless, unless you are masochistic, but I doubt you would go to any lengths to do this if the end result would allow you to feel [censored]. Also, by your example I dont think you understand the argument that has been going on very well. lol. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that was a bit confusing. What if your driver's license has an option on it to opt out of organ donation. By default you are an organ donor unless you choose otherwise. You don't check that box because either you didn't know or didn't care. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I think an apathetic person could commit many "self-less" acts every single day. [/ QUOTE ] Well, let the list begin. [/ QUOTE ] Anything that helps someone that you get no satisfaction out of: apathetic. Q "I'm drunk, can you pick me up? Again. I know it's late. Again". A "You idiot. Ok, I'll pick you up. Again" If you feel obligated to do something, and get no satisfaction out of it, isn't that selfless? What I'm saying is, whether an act is selfless depends upon the attitude of the actor. Perhaps contradictory, but if you don't care about your actions, it is selfless, but if you do care, it actually becomes 'selfish'. |
