Letters From A Nut by Ted L. Nancy. I think this book was written entirely by Seinfeld, though Seinfeld himself says otherwise in the forward. Turned into a series of at least three books with more of the same material. Really funny stuff.

Most people don't like to read 1000+ page books, and a lot of people don't like to read David Foster Wallace books, but if you can do both of these things, Infinite Jest is genius.

Unified story -- Catcher in the Rye.
Honorable mention: Catch-22. Second honorable mentions: Tropic of Capricorn by Henry Miller, and Journey to the End of the Night by Celine. Funniest overall: Without Feathers, by Woody Allen. A collection of short pieces, almost all brilliant. One of my favorites: If the Impressionists were Dentists. Allen is an award-winning writer of short comedy pieces, a true master, and this book had me laughing so hard it nearly killed me. Very Honorable Mentions: Self Help for the Bleak, by Rich Hall. Another series of short pieces, this time along a unified theme. Achingly funny throughout, but I give the nod to Allen still, if only for the variety of themes inherent in a collection of pieces that aren't unified. Unfair perhaps, but it's a matter of taste after all. Other honorable mentions: I Draw What I See, by Gahan Wilson. How to Make Yourself Miserable, by Dan Greenburg. Very funny guide to making every so much worse. The Portable Curmudgeon, by Jon Winokur(I think). Great collection of quotes and stories that will help you perfect your grouchhood or reluctantly and irritably acknowledge the world class achievements in surliness achieved by others. |

"He died with a Felafel in his hand."
Australian book where the author recounts in snippet form all the things that happened in his share-housing life. He lived in something like 80 different houses all up. This is so funny that I break down in tears whenever I read it. They made it into a slightly lame film. I'm a fan of HGTHG, and O'Rourke and Hiassen and Catch 22 as well, but nothing beats this. |

If you're a golfer, "Missing Links" by Rick Reilly is a great read.
I second the "Parliament of Whores" and "Letters from a Nut" choices. Very different from one another, but both solid. "Letters from a Nut" has more belly laughs. Finally, "Superstud" and "Kick Me" by Paul Feig (creater of the TV show "Freaks and Geeks") are both great portraits of a dorky childhood. |
